The present disclosure pertains to a compact antenna assembly adapted to be used with a remote key entry system for an associated vehicle that is configured to receive radio waves within the 200 MHz to 450 MHz frequency band or more particularly within about the 315 MHz band. The antenna assembly includes a meander line antenna trace of a desired geometry having a plurality of bends and strips that is configured to reduce the effect of electromagnetic interference. A dielectric substrate is configured to receive the antenna trace along a surface thereon wherein the dielectric substrate and antenna trace is installed within an associated housing that is generally compact and configured to be installed within the associated vehicle. The geometry of the meander line antenna trace is configured in either a symmetrical dipole antenna or an asymmetrical antenna. An RF cable can be attached to the antenna.

The present method of the invention utilizes photolithographic methods and plated through hole construction to fabricate the antenna without the need for hand assembly. A conductor trace is etched on both sides of a printed circuit board, and slotted vias are milled into the board, wherein the vias are plated through to form the continuous meander line circuit.

An antenna may be formed from a peripheral conductive housing structure in an electronic device that is separated from an antenna ground by a gap. An antenna feed may be formed from a metal trace on a flexible printed circuit that spans the gap. The metal trace may have a line segment that joins a wider pad portion of the trace at a junction. A stiffener on the flexible printed circuit may have a protrusion that overlaps the junction. A metal bracket attached to the peripheral housing structure may be soldered to the pad. A metal member with meandering paths may form a return path in the antenna. The meandering path may have parallel segments that extend along an inner surface of the peripheral conductive housing structure to prevent the metal member from rotating when a screw is used to screw the metal member to the peripheral conductive housing structure.

An extended varying angle antenna is used with an electromagnetic radiation dissipation device to reduce exposure to electromagnetic radiation. The extended antenna captures radiation from an active emission source, such as a transmitting cellular telephone. The device converts the captured radiation into an electric current and dissipates the collected current by operating the dissipation device. The extended antenna is a printed circuit board trace antenna comprising a microstrip having a meandering portion with several serially connected meandering segments and an extended portion. One or more meandering segments include 90-degree bends in the microstrip, and one or more meandering segments include bends of more and less than 90 degrees. The extended portion includes two or more parallel horizontal portions and at least one vertical portion, all connected by 90-degree bends. The extension is connected to the meandering portion or to the dissipation device to provide additional current to the dissipation device.
