The controller is electrically coupled to the Ethernet interface and the USB port, and converts the IFE content streams from the media server from Ethernet frames to USB frames for presentation to the PEDs.

An in-flight passenger entertainment system has a first digital network, using fibre optic cables, for communication among components of a headend system including a data server, media controller, and one or more media servers. The in-flight entertainment system is coupled to an aircraft's existing systems through a system interface unit and a system manager unit. The components of the headend system are all coupled to a network switch for routing data within the first network. The network switch is also coupled to one or more zone bridge units, each of which is coupled to multiple seat electronics units. The zone bridge units control all communications between the networks. The zone bridge units and the seat electronics units together form a second digital network. All communications across the networks are transmitted as digital data and when necessary are converted to analog signals at the seat electronics units. Through passenger control sets coupled to the seat electronics units, a passenger has access to audio and video on demand, video games, gambling, telephone service and information services. An overhead audio and video distribution system is used to provide audio and video content as a backup to the video on demand system or as an alternative subsystem in zones of the aircraft in which there are passenger control sets with less than full capability.

An in-flight entertainment and commercial transaction system has a video camera on the underside of an aircraft for producing a video signal. A processor correlates the video signal to GPS data. An advertiser database stores advertiser information including GPS data that corresponds to the advertiser information. A display presents the video signal and the stored advertiser information to a passenger. A map enhancement database provides map-enhancing data to the processor that is responsive to the GPS location and altitude of an aircraft. A portion of the advertiser data that is presented on the display is independent of the GPS location of an aircraft. In an advantageous embodiment, such advertiser data is made available to the passenger on soft buttons distributed on the display. Airport information is displayed in response to the GPS location of the aircraft or the selection of a destination airport, and to the selection of an arrival gate at the destination airport. Airport selection can be entered by a member of the flight crew.

Thus, each of the plurality of peripheral devices communicates with one of the host devices. Moreover, the mobile platform may be an aircraft including a control panel to control the network. Additionally, a CoreNet and the in flight entertainment and cabin services subsystem may be in communication with the network. Additionally, the network may include a satellite transceiver/ data router. In one embodiment, the peripherals use Bluetooth protocol devices to communicate with host devices on a virtual local area network within the network. The virtual network controls the security and quality of service of the network that interconnects the host and other devices.
