A coin processing system includes a coin processing machine configured to receive a plurality of randomly oriented coins in a coin input region thereof, process the coins, and determine a total amount of the coins. The coin processing system also includes a sensor configured to measure a pre-determined property associated with a component of the coin processing machine and/or an operational state of the coin processing machine and to output to a controller a signal related thereto. The coin processing system also includes an actuating device disposed to influence the pre-determined property. A controller is configured to monitor the signal output by the sensor and, responsive to a deviation of a value of the signal from an acceptable value for the signal, to execute an error recovery instruction set at least once. Execution of the error recovery instruction set by the controller causes an actuation of the actuating device to influence the pre-determined property to attempt to restore the operational parameter to a condition wherein the signal output by the sensor is within an acceptable value for the pre-determined property.

A bill recycler accepts bills and payment and dispenses previously accepted bills as change in a vending machine including a vending machine controller and a coin handler. The bill recycler receives from the coin handler information relating to denomination(s) and quantities of coins available for dispensing by the coin handler, alters that information to include information relating to quantities of denomination(s) of bills available for dispensing by the bill recycler, then sends the altered information to the vending machine controller.

A method for calibrating a coin checking device includes inserting a calibrating module into a coin passage. The coin passage contains at least one coin sensor for determining a coin's physical features. The calibrating module generates measuring signals which simulate an acceptable coin's presence. The measuring signals are received by the at least one coin sensor which in turn outputs sensor signals. The measuring signals and the sensor signals are used to calculate a calibration factor for the coin checking device.

A vending machine capable of effectively preventing fraudulent use of fake coins of a plurality of kinds. The number of slotted coins acceptable in one vending operation is preset in a setting unit (112). The coins slotted into a coin slotting unit (101) are counted based on the sensing output from a counting sensor (104). When a coin-return operation is performed while the count is equal to or larger than the preset acceptable number of coins, the coin return in response to the coin-return instruction is inhibited as a fraudulent use.

A method and apparatus for discriminating and collecting coins wherein an inserted coin is received in a notch of a rotary disk. Upon sensing the insertion of a coin into the notch, a motor rotates the disk through a predetermined arc to a predetermined angular orientation where a decision is made whether to accept or reject the coin based on coin characteristics such as the sensed diameter of the coin and metal content. If the coin is accepted, the disk is rotated to an angular orientation where the coin falls from the notch into a coin collection box. However, if the coin is rejected, the disk is rotated in the opposite direction to an angular orientation where the coin falls into a coin return chute. Sensors are also provided to sense the presence of the coin in the notch on the way back to the initial angular orientation. If the coin failed to fall out for any reason, another attempt is made to collect the coin. If still unsuccessful, a fault is indicated, and the apparatus remains in an inoperative state. Removal of the coin from the coin return chute is also sensed before another coin can be inserted.

An auditor system (10) includes a control circuit (30) that employs an off-hook detector (32) connected across the tip and ring lines (12 and 14) of a coin telephone to determine whether the coin telephone is off hook. It also employs a step-pulse detector (36) connected across the step relay terminals of the coin telephone, accept-pulse and reject-pulse detectors (40 and 42) connected across its accept/reject relay terminals, and a coin contact sensor (48) connected across its coin-contact terminals to keep track of the number of coins of each denomination accepted by the coin telephone. When the auditor system determines that the coin receptacle has collected a predetermined volume of coins, it connects a high-current power supply (18) across the tip and ring lines and thereby powers a transmitter (68) that sends dialing signals over the telephone lines to call up a data-collection computer at a remote location. Upon detecting, by means of a tone receiver (72), that the call has been answered, it employs the transmitter to send a request that the money in the coin telephone be collected. It also sends other information at the same time and receives information from the central computer for resetting some of its registers. Through the use of this type of auditor system, there is no need for the central computer to poll auditors at a number of coin-telephone locations, separate data lines are not needed, and the amount of communication over existing lines is kept to a minimum so that telephone traffic is not unduly increased.

PURPOSE: To provide a coin discriminating device, with which a forged coin can be accurately discriminated. CONSTITUTION: This device is provided with a magnetic sensor 12 for generating the magnetic data of coins, a CCD area sensor 24 for generating optical data, a first coin discriminating means 61 composed of reference optical data memories 51 and 52 for storing the reference optical data of respective denominations and a reference magnetic data storage memory 50 for storing the reference magnetic data of respective denominations, and a second coin discriminating means 62 for reading the reference magnetic data of the correspondent side of the coin of a certain denomination out of the reference magnetic data memory according to whether reference optical data, which are used when the first coin discriminating means discriminates that coins can be accepted on the basis of the reference optical data of that denomination, are reference optical data of the obverse of the coin of that denomination or reference optical data of the back, comparing these data with the magnetic data of coins generated by the magnetic sensor and finally discriminating whether coins can be accepted or not and the denomination of the coins.

A coin validation mechanism for evaluating coins and the like inserted therein and for validating acceptable coins includes a coin chute defining a coin path and a sensor for evaluating the type of material of which the object in the coin chute is made of. The sensor for evaluating includes a coil sensor positioned adjacent the coin path and a non-resonant electrical circuit for operation of the coil sensor. The coin validation mechanism also includes a light source for directing light across the coin path and a light sensor for sensing light directed across the coin path. An electronic unit is provided for evaluating an electromagnetic pertubation caused by an object moving past the coil sensor and for determining the amount of light blocked by the object in the coin path by comparing the amount of light sensed by the light sensor with the object in the coin with the amount of light sensed by the light sensor in the absence of an object in the coin path. The electronic unit further compares the amount of light blocked by the object in the coin path and the electromagnetic pertubation with known values for valid coins to evaluate whether the object in the coin path is a valid coin or not.
