A coin mechanism comprising testing means for testing coins as to their acceptability, a substantially upright coin store adapted to contain a plurality of acceptable coins of a particular denomination up to a predetermined upper level, and a coin dispenser for dispensing coins from the lower end of the store, characterised in that said coin store is provided with a coin inlet located below said predetermined upper level, and in that means is provided for delivering acceptable coins of said denomination from the testing means through said inlet into the store. This enables the coin store to be pre-loaded to the upper level and, when its contents have been partly dispensed, to be replenished from the coin tester, at the lower level.

A coin testing apparatus has a sensor outputting a detected signal corresponding to a deposited coin, a determinator for determining the value of the detecting signal, a discriminator for discriminating the authenticity and type of the coin by comparing the determined value with a coin acceptance range defined by maximum and minimum reference values, an initializor for initializing the coin acceptance range and memory for renewing the coin acceptance range by adding a predetermined value to or subtracting the predetermined value from the maximum and minimum reference values, respectively, when the practical determination range varies. Since the coin acceptance range is automatically corrected by the operation even if there is a variation in the range of the detected signal due to a drift of an electronic circuit or by variation in temperature, a correct and precise determination can be achieved.

An automatic fee determining system for use in parking facilities including means to totalize the amount of coins accepted by the system. The system includes means for calculating the fee due from a parking ticket. The customer inserts coins into a coin receptor and a ''''vend'''' signal is produced only when the total value of coins at least equals the calculated fee due. A coin return is provided to return coins so long as the total value of coins accepted is less than the calculated fee due. Means are provided to capture the coins when the amount accepted is at least as large as the calculated fee due. A pulse generator responsive to the ''''vend'''' signal is provided to produce a series of pulses corresponding to the value of the coins captured. The coin value pulses are counted by a pulse responsive totalizer which counts and stores the total value of coins captured.

The reference frame of production coin acceptors are calibrated with a set of reference objects so that their individual reference frames may be mapped from one to another to facilitate the transfer of coin signature data from one coin acceptor to another. Individual differences due to component variation are transformed out such that the windows of acceptance for each of the coin signature sensor readings may be as tight as possible to achieve both high acceptance of good coins and high security against unwanted coins.

A coin discriminating apparatus includes a magnetic sensor for detecting magnetic properties of a coin being transported and producing magnetic data of the coin, an optical sensor for producing optical data of the coin, a reference optical data memory for storing reference optical data of an obverse surface and a reverse surface of coins of each denomination, a reference magnetic data memory for storing reference magnetic data of an obverse surface and a reverse surface of coins of each denomination to be discriminated, a first coin discriminator for comparing optical data of the coin produced by the optical sensor with reference optical data of an obverse surface and a reverse surface of coins of each denomination and determining whether or not the coin is acceptable and the denomination of the coin, and a second coin discriminator for reading from the reference magnetic data memory magnetic reference data selected depending upon whether reference optical data of the obverse surface of a coin of a certain denomination or those of the reverse surface of the coin of the denomination were used when the first coin discriminator determined the coin to be acceptable and the denomination of the coin based thereon and comparing them with the magnetic data produced by the magnetic sensor, thereby finally discriminating whether or not the coin is acceptable and the denomination of the coin. According to the thus constituted coin discriminating apparatus, it is possible to accurately discriminate a counterfeit coin even when optical data acquired from the counterfeit coin such as diameter data and surface pattern data thereof coincide with those of genuine coins of a certain denomination and when the magnetic data acquired from the counterfeit coin are similar to those of coins of the denomination.
