The invention provides improved conditions for atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) of vanadium (IV) oxide. Specifically, higher quality vanadium oxide (particularly in the form of films) can be obtained by employing concentrations of precursors in the APCVD reaction which are substantially less than those used previously. These conditions improve the reproducibility of the films obtained by APCVD and also prevent particulate formation in the manufacturing apparatus, which in previous work had caused blockages. The films obtained have improved visual appearance, especially color, and/or have improved adhesion to a substrate. The obtained films also show a greater difference in transmission above and below the switching temperature than previous films. The invention also provides doped vanadium oxide, particularly with tungsten. Substrates (e.g. glass substrates) coated with a film of vanadium oxide are also provided. The vanadium oxide of the invention is useful for intelligent window systems, infrared modulators and data storage devices.

The feeding of coal slurries into a gasifier for the production of synthesis gas is improved by modifying the rheological properties of the coal particles so that conventional liquid transfer equipment can be used in the feed transfer process to the gasifier. The coal particle surface modification is accomplished by adsorbing asphaltenes derived from petroleum onto the surfaces of coal particles prior to and/or during contact with the slurry liquid. The coal particles with their surfaces thus modified exhibit lower particle-particle interaction in the liquid slurries to form a shear independent Newtonian fluid or a weakly shear thickening pseudoplastic fluid. The rheological properties of the slurries permit them to be transported reliably into a pressurized, entrained feed gasifier vessel using convention slurry pumps with a low potential expenditure of energy.

Co-axial, multi-rotor wind turbines, producing more power than a single rotor of the same diameter, are made even more powerful by increasing driveshaft length and supporting the driveshaft from more than one point. Sacrificing the ability to aim, for the extra length to support additional rotors, results in a more powerful co-axial multi-rotor turbine, especially useful for areas with a predominantly unidirectional wind resource. Ideally the turbine is placed at an offset angle α (alpha) from the wind direction, which, in combination with proper spacing between rotors, allows fresh wind to reach each rotor, so that all rotors contribute toward rotation of the driveshaft. Placing the driveshaft under tension can raise critical speeds and reduce the number of intermediate supports required. This places the Earth or underlying substrate in compression, making it effectively part of the structure of the turbine, saving cost. Cross-axis and reversible blades may also be incorporated.

Methods and devices for loading, deploying, and receiving concertina-wire barriers along paths with varying travel or paths located at a distance to the access track of a transport vehicle. The first method includes loading a concertina-wire coil arrangement directly into carry tines and adjusting the tine tilt during deployment to reflect the changing gradient. An anchored portion of the wire stretches each coil longitudinally into its operative configuration and position as the transport vehicle advances. Retrieval for both methods is accomplished by inserting the carry tines in the space circumscribed by the deployed coils so that as the transport vehicle advances the coil arrangement is removed from its deployment location and pressed together onto the tines thereby being disposed for the next deployment.

In the present pretensioner, press contact portions are formed further to a side of an open end of a packing housing section than central portions of opposing faces along a depth direction of the packing housing section. Accordingly, when a packing is being fitted into the packing housing section, no great resistance is imparted to a curved face side of the packing from a press contact wall of a housing section body and the opposing face, and the packing is fitted comparatively smoothly therein. Consequently, even when fitting the packing into the packing housing section, a packing main body is largely resilient-deformed, such that a large collapse in a through hole can be prevented, and the sealing ability of the seal due to deformation of the packing main body can be effectively enhanced.
