In response to these commands the receiving station adjusts its output power in steps.By combining a plurality of received power control commands before adjusting its output power the receiving station may emulate the ability to use a smaller power control step size than its minimum, thereby improving performance under certain channel conditions. In one embodiment when the required power control step size is less than the minimum step size of a particular station, that station processes a group of power control commands to determine whether to adjust its output power by its minimum step size. In an alternative embodiment the power control step size is fixed when the combining algorithm is used. The invention is applicable to power control in both primary and secondary stations.

The invention relates to a circuit and method for receiving a signal of which—at the receiver end—the frequency is basically unknown. By sampling the data and deriving the frequency of the signal (or actually: the data rate of the data carried by the signal) and setting a phase locked loop in the receiver to the derived—estimated—circuit, the receiver can very quickly tune in to the frequency of the signal. Hence, no embedded or accompanying clock is required for the signal. Oversampling of the signal by the receiver front end is preferred, though.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a typical multi-carrier technique that has been applied by many advanced wireless communication systems, e.g., 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) and WiMAX. In order to support high mobility transmission, the sub-carrier spacing of multi-carrier systems is made large enough to overcome the Doppler frequency offset. However, this large sub-carrier spacing results in lower transmission efficiency since the CP (Cyclic Prefix) consumes a considerable of radio resources. The present invention provides an adaptive scheme to determine the sub-carrier spacing in which the default sub-carrier spacing is set to support lower mobility, while the adaptively adjusted sub-carrier spacing based on User Equipment (UE) mobile velocities is set to support higher mobility.

A hierarchical protection switching framework uses detectors and protectors. A protector registers with a detector to receive notifications. A detector identifies a condition and the interested protector, and notifies the interested protector. The protector in response to the notification, typically either performs protection switching or notifies another protector of the condition. This protection switching is an extensible operation, and typically may include, but is not limited to switching traffic to a backup facility from a facility corresponding to the condition and switching traffic to a backup component from a component corresponding to the condition. The decision of a protector whether to notify another protector of the condition can be made based on different factors, such as, but not limited to a failure of the protection switching by the protector, a database lookup operation to identify whether notification of another particular condition has been received or not received, etc.

A SoftRouter architecture deconstructs routers by separating the control entities of a router from its forwarding components, enabling dynamic binding between them. In the SoftRouter architecture, control plane functions are aggregated and implemented on a few smart servers which control forwarding elements that are multiple network hops away. A dynamic binding protocol performs network-wide control plane failovers. Network stability is improved by aggregating and remotely hosting routing protocols, such as OSPF and BGP. This results in faster convergence, lower protocol messages processed, and fewer route changes following a failure. An SPM driver drives a spindle motor. A VCM driver drives a VCM. A DC/DC converter (switching regulator) receives a power supply voltage from an external circuit, and generates a stabilized voltage. Linear regulators each receive a power supply voltage from an external circuit, and each generates a stabilized voltage. A shock detection circuit detects vibration of a device mounting the driving circuit. A power monitoring circuit monitors the power supply voltage, and generates a power-on reset signal which is switched to a predetermined level whenever the power supply voltage is cut off. An ADC converts the back electromotive voltage that occurs at the VCM into a digital signal. A serial interface receives data from an external host processor, which is used to control the driving circuit. Cutoff circuits are arranged between the capacitors, which are to be charged using the induced current that occurs at the SPM, and the power supply terminal. When the power supply voltage is cut off, each cutoff circuit disconnects the corresponding capacitor from the power supply terminal.

A screening method for testing solid-state memories for the effects of long-term shift and random telegraph noise (RTN). In the context of static random access memories (SRAMs), each memory cell in the array is functionally tested with a bias voltage (e.g., the cell power supply voltage) at a severe first guardband sufficient to account for worst case long-term shift and RTN effects. Cells failing the first guardband are then repeatedly tested with the bias voltage at a second guardband, less severe than the first guardband; if the tested cells pass this second guardband, the suspect cells are considered to not be vulnerable to RTN effects. Over-screening due to an unduly severe guardband is avoided, while still screening vulnerable memories from the population.

Programming algorithms suitable for non-volatile memory devices are presented, where the usual staircase type of waveform is decomposed into multiple passes. The same pulses are used, but their order is different, being broken down into N subsets of every N-th pulse so that there are N programming passes. For example, in a four pass version the first pass would sequentially have pulses (1, 5, 9, . . . ) of the staircase; the second pass would have pulses (2, 6, 10, . . . ); and so on for the third and fourth passes. By using a large step size for stepping up the program voltage VPGM, pre-verify and shifted verify margins for the different passes, a narrow distribution can be obtained with multiple passes. Also, in a complementary set of features, a quick pass write (QPW) can be done without the drawback of doing QPW verify by the use of shared verify levels.

Phase differences associated with a defocused wavefront can be determined from a single color image. The color image, which is a measurement of intensity as a function of wavelength, is used to calculate the change in intensity with respect to wavelength over the image plane. The change in intensity can then be used to estimate a phase difference associated with the defocused wavefront using two-dimensional fast Fourier transform solvers. The phase difference can be used to infer information about objects in the path of the defocused wavefront. For example, it can be used to determine an object's shape, surface profile, or refractive index profile. It can also be used to calculate path length differences for actuating adaptive optical systems. Compared to other techniques, deriving phase from defocused color images is faster, simpler, and can be implemented using standard color filters.
