Techniques disclosed herein may achieve crack free filling of structures. A flowable film may substantially fill gaps in a structure and extend over a base in an open area adjacent to the structure. The top surface of the flowable film in the open area may slope down and may be lower than top surfaces of the structure. A capping layer having compressive stress may be formed over the flowable film. The bottom surface of the capping layer in the open area adjacent to the structure is lower than the top surfaces of the lines and may be formed on the downward slope of the flowable film. A method for forming biodegradable fibers is provided. The method includes blending polylactic acid with a polyepoxide modifier to form a thermoplastic composition, extruding the thermoplastic composition through a die, and thereafter passing the extruded composition through a die to form a fiber. Without intending to be limited by theory, it is believed that the polyepoxide modifier reacts with the polylactic acid and results in branching of its polymer backbone, thereby improving its melt strength and stability during fiber spinning without significantly reducing glass transition temperature. The reaction-induced branching can also increase molecular weight, which may lead to improved fiber ductility and the ability to better dissipate energy when subjected to an elongation force. To minimize premature reaction, the polylactic acid and polyepoxide modifier are first blended together at a relatively low temperature(s). Nevertheless, a relatively high shear rate may be employed during blending to induce chain scission of the polylactic acid backbone, thereby making more hydroxyl and/or carboxyl groups available for subsequent reaction with the polyepoxide modifier. Once blended, the temperature(s) employed during extrusion of the blended composition can be selected to both melt the composition and initiate a reaction of the polyepoxide modifier with hydroxyl and/or carboxyl groups of the polylactic acid. Through selective control over this method, the present inventors have discovered that the resulting fibers may exhibit good mechanical properties, both during and after melt spinning.

Provided is a connector in which a decrease in contact pressure due to the shape degradation of the pressing portions does not occur even if the operation of rotating the pressing member is repeated. Since the connector main body has, at the rear end, supporting portions that rotatably support the pressing portion, the pressing portion rotates while butting the rear ends of the movable pieces and the supporting portions so that the rear ends of the movable pieces are pushed up by the pressing portion, the butting of the pressing portion and the supporting portions is contact between synthetic-resin components, this eliminates the pressing portion being cut off due to contact with the supporting portions even if the rotation of the pressing member is repeated, and hence the shape degradation of the pressing portion can be prevented.

A relatively warm mineral deposit is solution mined by injecting fluid through a well drilled into the deposit and dissolving the mineral to form a production brine. Warm production brine is cooled at the surface using a heat exchanger as a crystallizer to precipitate the mineral in the exchanger and form a slurry. Crystals of the mineral in the slurry are recovered in a separation plant leaving a relatively cool, dilute or depleted brine, which is conveyed through the heat exchanger for cooling the production brine and then injected into the mineral deposit to dissolve more mineral thereby providing a continuous process. A pipe-in-pipe heat exchanger is preferably used and in a manner so that the heat exchanger also serves as a primary means for conveying the production fluid and/or slurry from the well to the separation plant. This method extracts and recovers the desired mineral(s), recovers much of the heat in the production brine, accelerates the solution mining process since the injection fluid has been warmed, reduces salting in the production string, is relatively inexpensive to install and maintain, and does not require a source of energy for cooling the production brine such as electricity for a refrigeration system.

In a compression self-igniting internal combustion engine, a fuel injection by an auxiliary injection ends before a gas temperature inside a cylinder reaches a temperature at which a fuel starts a low-temperature oxidation reaction. Specifically, an in-cylinder gas temperature (750K) is used as a reference, and the auxiliary injection is carried out before the in-cylinder gas temperature reaches 750K, so as to separate the low-temperature oxidation reaction and a high-temperature oxidation reaction from one another. This control makes a premixed combustion slow before a compression top dead center is reached, and ensures control of the premixed combustion in a temperature controlled manner in accordance with the transition of the in-cylinder gas temperature. This ensures unambiguous determination of the injection time of the auxiliary injection based on the in-cylinder temperature, and facilitates the attempt to simplify the fuel injection control.

A locomotive (or other rail vehicle) truck and method for distributing weight asymmetrically to axles of the truck includes a first axle of a truck uncoupled from a traction system of the locomotive and a first suspension assembly coupling the first axle to the truck for applying to the first axle a first portion of a locomotive weight. The truck also includes a second axle coupled to the traction system and a second suspension assembly coupling the second axle to the truck for applying a second portion of the locomotive weight to the second axle that is greater than the first portion so that weight is asymmetrically distributed to the first axle and the second axle so as to transmit a corresponding incremental amount of tractive effort for a given amount of a driving torque applied to the second axle via the traction system of the locomotive. The axle weight distribution involves relatively slight weight distribution compared to the nominal weights normally carried by the axles.

A bale size sensing mechanism for an agricultural round baler having bale chamber partially defined by continuous side-by-side belts disposed between a pair of spaced-apart side walls and trained around a plurality of rolls. Bale size sensing mechanisms disposed in each side wall detects the density of the transverse ends of a bale forming within the chamber and provides the measure to a controller which determines the transverse uniformity of the bale. Each sensing mechanism includes a generally planar element having a wedge-shaped periphery with a vertex, the planar element being pivotally coupled to the baler adjacent to the vertex and a portion of the wedge-shaped periphery projecting into the bale-forming chamber to interact with the bale forming therein. The wedge-shaped periphery minimizes open areas within the bale chamber into which turbulent crop could enter and jam the sensing mechanism.

An incendiary machine (10) comprises a feed and dispensing system (12), a priming system (20) and a control system. The feed and dispensing system (12) feeds a belt (14) of incendiary capsules (16) to a region at which individual capsules are separated from the belt and dispensed from the machine (10). The priming system (20) primes the capsule (16) prior to being dispensed from the machine (10) with a priming liquid which, when delivered into a capsule, facilitates an exothermic reaction. The control system controls the feed and dispensing system (12), and the priming system (20) independently of each other so that the belt (14) can be fed into and indeed thought the machine (10) with the priming liquid being injected into the capsules.

In an improvement to a pipe re-facing machine having a rotatable flange plate and a coaxially-mounted collar rotatable with and longitudinally movable relative to the flange plate, a support bracket projects from the flange plate, and a support block is retainingly mounted to and movable relative to the support bracket in an angled radial direction. The support block is adapted to receive a tool holder carrying a cutting element. An actuating mechanism is engageable with the support block such that longitudinal movement of the collar will move the support block relative to the support bracket. The actuating mechanism can thus move the cutting element in an angled direction relative to the axis of a tubular workpiece, thereby enabling machining of a bevelled edge on an annular shoulder of a tubular workpiece non-rotatably mounted to the re-facing machine by longitudinally moving the collar while rotating the flange plate.

In a dual clutch transmission, a transmission control unit operates at vehicle start such that a clutch engaged is changed from a second clutch, which is on a high speed gear stage side, to a first clutch, which is on a low speed gear stage side, resulting in a torque transmission path being changed. At this time, torque capacities of the first and second clutches change so that thermal loads on the first and second clutches are equal or approximately equal according to a clutch rotational speed difference that is a rotational speed difference between the driving side and the driven side in the first clutch.
