A palladium-only (i.e., platinum free) oxidation catalyst body is used to oxidize carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons in the exhaust stream of a diesel engine powered vehicle, which is operated at a fuel-lean air-to-fuel ratio (A/F) for much of the time it powers a vehicle. Periodically, a recent history of the temperatures of the exhaust gas at the inlet to the palladium oxidation catalyst body is prepared in a computer control module. And a recent history of the A/F of the operating engine is considered. These temperature and A/F values are then used in determining whether the engine should be temporarily operated in a fuel-rich or stoichiometric A/F mode to provide an exhaust gas composition suitable for rejuvenation of the palladium by reducing its oxide formed during lean operation of the engine.

The invention provides efficient methods of preparing a target nucleic acid in a form suitable for sequencing. The methods are particularly amenable for preparing high quality nucleic acids for massively parallel sequencing. The methods involve capturing a target nucleic acid from a sample and PCR amplification of the target nucleic acid. The target nucleic acid is captured by binding to a capture probe, which in turn binds to an immobilized probe. The immobilized probe is typically immobilized via a magnetic bead. The captured target nucleic acid is PCR amplified by thermocycling without prior dissociation of the target nucleic acid from the beads. The efficiency of the method lies in part in that both the capture and amplification steps are performed in a single vessel. The amplified nucleic acid can then be sequenced.

A method is described for producing a sawing bead for use in a sawing cord. Sawing cords are used for cutting hard and brittle materials. In the method, laser cladding is used to form an abrasive layer on a small metallic tube (204) or sleeve. The abrasive layer (220) comprises a metal matrix material in which abrasive particles such as diamond, cubic boron nitride or other hard cutting materials are embedded. The metal matrix material preferably comprises an active metal that improves wetting and adhesion of the abrasive particles. This is achieved by letting the tube (204) rotate relative to the laser cladding system possibly in combination with a relative axial movement so that the cladding track loops on itself thereby forming an abrasive layer (220). Additionally the method allows to shape the sawing bead for improved geometrical tolerances and centricity. Production times are less than ten seconds per bead and the method is easily automated.

Improvements in a method to enhance eyelashes are disclosed. The method uses placement of multiple clusters along an eyelid. Because multiple flare lashes are used an installer can weave an alternating thread on opposing sides of the real lash and the false flair lashes. The thread is preferably thin and simulates the appearance of the human or false lash. The thread or hair is woven into the eyelash with a natural needle formed from horse, animal or human hair with a naturally tapering end and a slot cut or formed in the opposing end of the hair to accept thread. Glue is utilized to cement the real eyelashes to the false eyelashes and the thread or hair.
