A drillstring combination pressure reducing and signaling valve assembly uses multiple ball valves mounted in parallel, each having a different bore, to meter the flow through a drillstring. The individual ball valves are maintained in either a fully open or a fully closed position, but can be selectively moved between these two positions. The bores of the individual ball valves are sized so that at a given pressure, a first ball valve has a predetermined flow rate, a second ball valve has twice the flow rate of the first ball valve, a third ball valve has twice the flow rate of the second ball valve, and the remaining ball valves each have twice the flow rate of their predecessor in the valve sequence. This arrangement permits the flow rate and flow pressure drop through the assembly of valves to be digitally controlled by varying the combination of open and closed valves. In addition, another ball valve serving as a signaling valve is rapidly shifted either between a closed position, an open position, and back to a closed position. The signaling valve serves as a bidirectional signaling valve by relaying sensed pressure pulse signals emanating from either above or below the signaling valve past the valve assembly. Alternatively, the additional ball valve can be rapidly shifted between an initial open position to a closed position and then to a final open position. Pressure sensing is provided both above and below the valve assembly, and operative and control means are provided for the valve assembly.

The shift-speed determining unit determines a target shift-speed when the mode determining unit determines to enter the CD mode. The shift determining unit determines whether to change the shift-speed determined by the shift-speed determining unit. The shift-speed is determined by using transmission efficiency and motor efficiency when the plug-in hybrid vehicle drives in the CD mode, such that fuel consumption is reduced and performance is improved.

Hydrogen chloride in superheated steam is neutralized by contacting the steam with a solution containing potassium carbonate. A solution of potassium carbonate will remain liquid when contacted by steam superheated by as much as 40° C. and, unlike sodium carbonate, the degree of superheat of a saturated solution of potassium carbonate increases with temperature. Other highly soluble potassium salts or salt inhibitors can be added to prevent precipitation of solid potassium chloride which may occur under certain conditions, or a small amount of additional water can be added to keep the potassium chloride in solution while allowing the steam to remain superheated. Injection of potassium carbonate solution downhole in a dry steam geothermal well to protect the well casing from corrosion is especially beneficial, because only a small amount of carrier water needs to be injected together with the potassium carbonate, whereby the steam remains superheated and the possibility of localized corrosion is avoided.

The present invention deals with discrimination of malignant tissue from normal and benign tissue in a single patient on the basis of optical spectroscopic measurements. Starting from spectroscopic measurements in normal tissue, reference values are obtained for the normal class. With spectroscopic measurements in other tissues data points can be assigned to new class(es) when the spectral characteristics fall outside a threshold defining the reference class. Thresholds between different classes can also be defined. Finding (the transition to) malignant tissue is based on comparing the spectroscopic values to the classification threshold discriminating normal and benign versus malignant tissue. Thus, the basis of normal spectroscopic measurements is tuned to the individual patient characteristic. Discriminating the normal plus benign and malignant from that reference is more efficient compared to the reference of the all patient database.
