High quality, catalyst-free boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) that are long, flexible, have few wall molecules and few defects in the crystalline structure, can be efficiently produced by a process driven primarily by Direct Induction. Secondary Direct Induction coils, Direct Current heaters, lasers, and electric arcs can provide additional heating to tailor the processes and enhance the quality of the BN-NTs while reducing impurities. Heating the initial boron feed stock to temperatures causing it to act as an electrical conductor can be achieved by including refractory metals in the initial boron feed stock, or providing additional heat via lasers or electric arcs. Direct Induction processes may be energy efficient and sustainable for indefinite periods of time. Careful heat and gas flow profile management may be used to enhance production of high quality BNNT at significant production rates.

Components with improved erosion resistance are disclosed. A surface of the component or a substrate of the component is modified by coating the substrate with an elastomer layer. The elastomer layer is then modified by embedding hard particles onto an outer side of the elastomer layer. The hard particles exhibit higher fractured toughness providing enhanced erosion protection. The elastic properties of the elastomer experience little reduction because the surface embedded particles are located only at the outer side or outer surface of the elastomer layer. Therefore, the bond between the inner side of the elastomer layer and the substrate or component surface is not interfered with and the potential for electro-chemical corrosion and poor adhesion are not increased by the presence of the hard particles as the hard particles are located away from the inner face between the elastomer layer and the substrate.

Devices and methods are described that provide improved diagnosis from the processing of physiological data. The methods include use of transforms prior to submitting the data to a multiple level neural network. In one embodiment for ECG analysis, a template is used to subtract data that is not pertinent to the diagnosis and then a Fourier transform is applied to the time series data. Examples are shown with applications to electrocardiogram data, but the methods taught are applicable to many types of physiological data.

An acoustic sensor attached to a medical patient can non-invasively detect acoustic vibrations indicative of physiological parameters of the medical patient and produce an acoustic signal corresponding to the acoustic vibrations. The acoustic signal can be integrated one or more times with respect to time, and a physiological monitoring system can determine pulse or respiration parameters based on the integrated acoustic signal. The physiological monitoring system can, for instance, estimate a pulse rate according to pulses in the integrated acoustic signal and a respiration rate according to a modulation of the integrated acoustic signal, among other parameters. Further, the physiological monitoring system can compare the integrated acoustic signal or parameters determined based on the integrated acoustic signal with other signals or parameters to activate alarms.
