The invention relates to a method for operating a display unit (A), said display unit (A) being a component of a field device of process automation engineering or being connectable to such a field device, comprising the following steps: calling a function of display electronics (AE) relating to the display unit (A) by means of field device electronics (FE) relating to the field device, said function serving to visualize textual information on the display unit (A); carrying out the function by means of the display electronics (AE), wherein the carrying out of the function comprises receiving textual information from the field device electronics (FE), wherein the textual information is substantially free of the visualization of the design information relating to the textual information; and visualizing the transmitted textual information on the display unit (A) based on a display scheme stored, in particular completely, in the display electronics (AE) of the display unit (A), said display scheme comprising design information, in particular in the form of layouts and/or fonts.
