PURPOSE:To obtain a new biphenylmethane derivative useful as an agent for the treatment of hypertension and/or cardiac insufficiency and its pharmacologically permissible salt. CONSTITUTION:This biphenylmethane derivative is a compound expressed by formula I [R is H, an alkyl, a cycloalkyl, a halogenated alkyl, S-R (R is H, an alkyl, a cycloalkyl, etc.), etc.; R and R each is H, a halogen, a lower alkyl, etc.; R is H or a lower alkyl; R is group of formula II, carboxyl, etc.; R is H, a halogen, hydroxy or a lower alkoxy; A =A --A =A is CH=CH-CH =CH, etc.] or its pharmacologically permissible salt, e.g. 7-methyl-2-eta- propyl-3-[(2'-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-biphenyl-4-yl)methyl]-3H-imidazo[4,5- b]pyridine. The compound of formula I wherein R is group of formula II can be produced by using a compound of formula III as a starting substance, reacting with a nitrile compound and reacting the reaction product with an azide of formula IV.
