A water-resistant stress-distributing layer for use in the protection of tissue of a patient during a surgical procedure, wherein the water-resistant stress-distributing layer has opposite first and second major surfaces, and includes a hydrophobic polymer, wherein the water-resistant stress-distributing layer is to be employed in a method selected from: (i) applying an incise drape to a patient over a presurgical skin preparation followed by applying the water-resistant stress-distributing layer over the incise drape; (ii) applying the water-resistant stress-distributing layer to an incise drape to provide a water-resistant stress-distributing composite and then applying the water-resistant stress-distributing composite to the patient; (iii) applying the water-resistant stress-distributing layer to the tissue of a patient over a presurgical skin preparation, followed by applying an incise drape over the water-resistant stress-distributing layer; (iv) applying a water-resistant stress-distributing layer over a presurgical skin preparation without the use of an incise drape; and (v) applying a water-resistant stress-distributing layer over a presurgical polymeric barrier film.

Multilayer articles including a tie layer used to enhance the bond between the hydrophilic absorbent layer and the barrier layer are also described. Methods of making and using such articles are also described.

Dimensionally stable nonwoven fibrous webs include a plurality of fibers formed from one or more thermoplastic polyesters and an antishrink additive, preferably in an amount greater than 0% and no more than 10% by weight of the web. The webs have at least one dimension which decreases by no greater than 12% in the plane of the web when heated to a temperature above a glass transition temperature of the fibers. The webs may be used as wipes.

Polymeric compositions that include polyurethane polymers derived from a polyisocyanate compound and a polyactive hydrogen compound. The polyurethane compound is at least partially endcapped with a group including at least one antimicrobial quaternary ammonium compound. The polymeric composition of the present invention is capable of forming a self-supporting film. The polymeric compositions are suitable for coating substrates to effectively kill or prevent the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, mold, mildew, algae fungi and the like. The polymeric compositions are particularly useful for protecting construction materials used in moist, outdoor environments to prevent discoloration or decay from microorganisms and for surfaces in health care facilities to mitigate the spread of pathogens.

Antimicrobial compositions comprising aliphatic polyester, and an antimicrobial component effective for antimicrobial activity, and, in some embodiments, an enhancer. Example: blend of poly(lactic acid) polymer (55g) with propyleneglycol monolaurate antimicrobial component (9g), and benzoic acid enhancer (1g). Inventive resin compositions are effective against gram negative and gram positive bacteria, mold and mildew. Preferred compositions comprise materials that are GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe).
