The invention especially relates to spiro compounds with a fluorene structure which are derived from naphthopyrans. Said compounds are known as spirofluorenopyrans . According to the invention, only one strong electron-pushing or electron-attracting group is introduced in each case into specific positions on the periphery of the pyran dye in order to obtain photochromic compounds which are characterised, in their excited form, by an enlarged colour spectrum accompanied by comparatively good brightening speeds and behaviour in the shelf life test.
