This invention relates to the hot bending of a metal pipe to a small radius and has the object to keep the temperature of the heated portion of the pipe substantially constant during a gradual decrease and increase, respectively, of the bending radius during initial and final phases of the bending operation so that there will be a very gentle and smooth change in pipe wall thickness. To gradually change the radius, the speed at which the heater is moved relative to the pipe is gradually changed and the temperature of the heated portion of the pipe is maintained constant in that the ratio of the heat output of the heater to the relative speed of the heated portion of the pipe is kept constant.
