摘要:
A method and an apparatus for protecting call privacy allow a calling party to control the privacy of a telephone call by selecting (84) among a group of privacy options that represent varying degrees of privacy and enforcing (92) the selected privacy options during the call. The privacy options selected for the call limit the ability of a called party to manipulate the call. For example, the privacy options may prevent the called party from forwarding the call, transferring the call, conferencing the call, and/or listening to the call via a hands-free speakerphone. In an additional aspect of the invention, the selected privacy options are transferred (94) to any voicemail messages that are generated as a result of the call made by the calling party. The preferred call privacy system is implemented in a packet-based network (40) that carries voice and data.

A system and method enabling a user to remotely access an electronic calendar (62) using a telephone network (32) is provided. The system (22) includes the electronic calendar (62) for storing one or more schedules and a scheduler (60) for accessing the schedules as a function of input signals received over the telephone network (32). Each schedule contains future appointments and events for either daily, weekly or other data interval periods. The scheduler (60) enables selective retrieval and display of the appointments and events for any selected time period. The system is coupled to interfaces (24-30) allowing the schedule information to be transmitted as audio information, video information, or e-mail information. The scheduler (60) can compare the schedules to one another to automatically generate common meeting times. The common meeting time can then be transmitted to the various attendees using e-mail, audible instructions or voice mail.

A system for providing automatic call distribution and training is provided. This system includes agents capable of answering incoming telephone calls. In the preferred embodiment, a queue handler processes the incoming telephone calls to an automatic call distribution system. A monitoring means, such as a server, is used to monitor the queue. It can also monitor agent activities. A contacting means, such as a computer, is used for connecting the agents to the incoming calls. The contacting means also provides training to the agent. Thus, the agents are automatically provided with training based on the queue activity.

A notification method for providing camp-on capability includes utilizing device-to-device signal exchanges via a data network. As a result, the camp-on capability may be enabled at a called communication device by means of a signal sent from a calling communication device. In the preferred embodiment, the data network is the global communications network referred to as the Internet, but this is not critical. As a response to the determination that the called communication device, such as the telephone, is in an unavailable condition, a first notification signal is transmitted from a calling communication device to the unavailable called device. The first notification signal may be an application program that is automatically executed at the called device. Alternatively, the first notification signal may be a special protocol element that triggers execution of a camp-on program stored at the called device. The first notification signal includes the network address of the calling device. When the executed program determines that the called communication device is available to receive an incoming call, a second notification signal is transmitted to the original calling device. In response, the original calling device reinitiates the process of establishing connectivity with the called device.

A method and system (18) for processing user-level messages, such as voicemail messages, among messaging systems (12 and 14) within a network includes enabling inter-system transmissions of identifications of the physical locations in memory space (52) for the mailboxes (54) in which the contents of the user-level messages are directed. Each mailbox in a particular system is uniquely associated with a user and with a physical location in memory space at the system. The physical locations of the mailboxes are identified (58) to remote systems within the network, so that the user-level messages may be accompanied by system-level messages that identify the appropriate physical locations. Thus, a receiving system may determine (68) the physical location of an intended mailbox without performing a database search. In the preferred embodiment, each system-level message also includes the mailbox number, so that the receiving station may verify (72) the physical location by matching the identified mailbox number with the actual mailbox number. If the mailbox numbers do not match or if there is no identification of the physical location within the system-level message, the receiving system performs a search (70) of the available mailboxes to determine the appropriate mailbox for storing (74) the user-level message.

A system and method for a gatekeeper (108) are provided to multicast commands to all gateways (106) in the system. The gateways (106) listen for one of their peer gateways (106) to accept. If one accepts, then the other gateways ignore the pending call request. The gatekeeper (108) making the request can specify an order in which the gateways (106) are to respond to its request. The order may be based on a variety of factors, such as number of calls presently being handled by a particular gateway (106) or cost of calls. Further, the gateways (106) may be provided with timers to process a call request in the requested order if a gateway (106) earlier in the queue fails to respond.

A multipoint control unit (104) is provided which allows for dynamic codec selection. According to one embodiment, the MCU (104) causes endpoints (102, 106) to renegotiate their codec selections if a most-commonly available codec is not being used, upon entry of new parties to a teleconference. Alternatively, the codec renegotiation may be performed each time a user speaks, to optimize for maximum transmission quality or for minimizing transcoding.

An H.323 client terminal (102) according to an embodiment of the invention employs primary and secondary H.323 control units or state machines (110a, 110b). The primary control unit (110a) sends signaling messages to a primary gatekeeper (108a) and triggers the secondary control unit (110b) to send a message with an appropriate correlation identifier to a secondary gatekeeper (108b). The primary control unit (110a) establishes a call per standard H.323 protocols. The secondary control unit (110b) also establishes a call via a secondary gatekeeper (108b). However, no media channels are established for this back up call. As the secondary control unit (110b) receives signaling from the secondary gatekeeper (108b), it checks the status of the call with the primary control unit (110a). If the call signaling on the primary control unit (110a) is proceeding normally, no further action is taken. If the call signaling with the primary gatekeeper (108a) fails, the secondary control unit (110b) takes over communication.

A bandwidth adjustment server, BWAS 109 is provided which monitors system bandwidth usage, sends requests to terminals 102A, 102B and/or 106, to identify their coding capabilities, and directs each of the terminals to adjust their coding algorithms based on system bandwidth usage. If system bandwidth usage is high, the BWAS 109 requires the terminals to employ a less bandwidth intensive coding algorithm; similarly, when system bandwidth usage is low, the BWAS 109 will allow the terminals to employ higher bandwidth use coding algorithms.
