The invention relates to a catheter, in particular for endovascular applications, comprising a long and flexible, hollow, tubular body (1) having an insertion end (4) and a connection end (3) intended to remain outside the body. According to the invention, the catheter comprises in the insertion end (4) at least two elements (9, 12) which are expandable/contractible by means of external operation. Said elements are located at a distance from each other, one upstream and the other downstream of a given section of a vessel. With the catheter it is possible to operate in the section comprised between the two expandable elements (9, 12) and, if necessary, in the intermediate arterial branch which, on account of the two elements (9, 12) upstream and downstream, will have a zero flow.

A catheter (10) for the administration of a liquid agent at a target site includes a catheter tube (11), a handle (12) and a conduit (13) that extends through a central volume formed in the handle. The catheter includes a guidewire lumen (22) and two parallel liquid agent transfer lumens (23, 24). The conduit seals into the proximal end of the guidewire lumen and to the handle at a first entry port (30) and spans the central volume. The tube therefore prevents the transfer of any liquid agent into the guidewire lumen and provides a passageway for enabling the catheter to transfer over the guidewire. With two transfer lumens the catheter tube provides a maximum transfer flow rate while maintaining the ability of the catheter to resist kinking and bending.

An improved multi-lumen catheter with tip configurations for the simultaneous injection and withdrawal of fluids. The multi-lumen catheter is a hollow cylindrical structure preferably made of polyurethane. It includes an outer catheter, generally used for the removal of fluid from a patient, and an inner catheter, generally used for injection of fluids into a patient. The inner catheter is contained within the outer catheter, extends throughout its length and is bisected by a septum to create two parallel lumens. The shape of each lumen depends on the shape of the septum. For example, if the inner catheter is split in half, the resulting two lumens are D-shaped. The inner catheter is secured by either the outer catheter's tapered distal end, or a bond, wherein the bond secures the inner catheter to the outer catheter. In a preferred embodiment, the inner catheter extends beyond the distal end of the outer catheter to promote a better separation between intake fluid and outflow fluid. The tips can be bevelled, curved, slanted or otherwise altered so that occlusion is less likely. Further, side openings can be cut into either the outer catheter, the inner catheter, or both to improve the reliability of blood flow in case that one of the lumens becomes occluded. Additionally, the multi-lumen catheter can be supplied with a protective sheath to maintain a sterile environment.

A multi-lumen catheter and method of manufacturing such a multi-lumen catheter having a plurality of individual catheter tubes. Each catheter tube has an outer surface, an inner surface and a lumen. The catheter tubes can be made of different thermoplastic materials. A mandrel is first inserted into the lumen of each catheter tube to provide support. The catheter tubes are then juxtaposed to each other in an arrangement. Importantly, the outer surface of one catheter tube is in contact with the outer surface of at least one other catheter tube in the arrangement. The arrangement of catheter tubes is then held in a sleeve and is advanced through the sleeve, and through a heating cylinder to fuse the outer surfaces of the catheter tubes. A cooling means is placed in the lumen of each catheter tube to prevent the inner surface of each catheter tube from melting.

A catheter system and devices for achieving total cardiopulmonary bypass during heart surgery are provided. The venous perfusion catheter has first and second balloons occluding the inferior and superior vena cava thereby precluding blood flow into the right atrium. An arterial perfusion catheter is inserted, advanced and positioned in the ascending aorta cephalid of the junction of the coronary arteries with the aortic root. A second flexible arterial cannula is mounted in sliding relationship with the first flexible cannula and carries an inflatable balloon adjacent its distal end to provide for occlusion of the ascending aorta. A first flexible cannula has a first lumen and an arterial venting orifice communicating with the first lumen defining a single flow path for the passage of cardioplegia solution to arrest the heart or for the evacuation of blood from the aortic root. A third lumen extends axially through the first flexible arterial cannula and communicates with a multiplicity of openings in the distal tip for suctioning blood from the left ventricle. The second flexible cannula of the arterial perfusion catheter has a first cavity extending axially therethrough that communicates with an opening at its distal tip to permit the passage of blood delivered by the cardiopulmonary bypass pump into arterial circulation. Both the venous and arterial perfusion catheters have a plurality of radially and oppositely spaced steering lumens and a plurality of steering cables fixed to the distal ends to achieve omnidirectional articulation.
