The present invention relates to an exposure device for living cell cultures, the device having a medium chamber common to a plurality of cell culture chambers and medium directing means. The medium chamber, cell culture chambers and the medium directing means may be arranged so as to provide substantially contemporaneous medium exchange at the cell culture chambers.

The present invention details the design and operation of a miniaturized device array in which a range of simultaneous mechanical forces are produced by a single external pressure source. The invention is primarily embodied in a microfabricated device arrays designed to rapidly probe biological cell response to various combinations of mechanical, chemical and extra-cellular matrix parameters in a high-throughput fashion.

A cell culture device allows co-cultivation on both sides of a membrane and has an outer tubular body with upper end having an opening and lower end closed by the membrane, an inner surface and an outer surface, which can be colonized with biological material, a complementary tubular body whose inner diameter fits onto the outer diameter of the lower end and a hanger component with upper end and a lower end. A flange extends from the upper end and the outer diameter component fits the inner diameter of the outer tubular body. The outer tubular body in a first step is connected to the complementary tubular body to form a standing insert for a first cell cultivation, and in a second step wherein the outer tubular body is disengaged from the complementary tubular body and is attached to the hanger component for a second cell cultivation.

A multilayered cell culture apparatus for the culturing of cells is disclosed. The cell culture apparatus is defined as an integral structure having a plurality of cell culture chambers in combination with tracheal space(s). The body of the apparatus has imparted therein gas permeable membranes in combination with tracheal spaces that will allow the free flow of gases between the cell culture chambers and the external environment. The flask body also includes an aperture that will allow access to the cell growth chambers by means of a needle or cannula. The size of the apparatus, and location of an optional neck and cap section, allows for its manipulation by standard automated assay equipment, further making the apparatus ideal for high throughput applications.

The invention relates to a transfer unit for receiving in particular a porous disc-shaped medium from a first processing device, having an upper part, wherein the upper part comprises a fixing edge that can be connected to an edge of the medium for removing the medium from the first processing device, wherein the upper part comprises an opening closed by a removable cover, by means of which successive processing in a further processing device can be performed. The invention further relates to a method wherein an upper part of a transfer unit is placed on a disc-shaped medium disposed in a first lower part of a first processing device and exposed to the liquid sample and is connected to an edge of the medium, wherein the upper part is lifted off from the first lower part with the disc-shaped medium connected thereto, and is placed on a further lower part of a corresponding processing device, and is further processed through an opening in the upper part.

The invention relates to a method for analysing the effect of a gaseous medium on a biological test system using an extracellular metabolisation system. Said method consists of the following steps: a biological test sample is cultivated on a permeable carrier, the gaseous medium is guided over the surface of the biological test system in order to form an exposition atmosphere over the biological test system, the extracellular metabolisation system is added to a conservation medium and the permeable carrier is brought into contact with a conservation medium that comprises the extracellular metabolisation system below the permeable carrier, in such a manner that the extracellular metabolisation system only passes through the permeable carrier and that the biological test system is not submerged by the conservation medium containing the extracellular metabolisation system.
