In particular, mechanism are provided that enable downlink precoding in situations where user equipment antenna configuration includes an unequal number of transmit chains and receive chains. A mobile device transmits modulated sounding reference signals on each antenna during a calibration stage. The mobile device then transmits non-modulated sounding reference signals during a normal mode. A base station utilizes the modulated and non-modulated sounding reference signals to restore a downlink channel estimate employed in downlink precoding.

In a MIMO receiver, initial solutions using sub-optional decoding algorithm are determined for the symbols transmitted from each of a number of transmit antennas at a given time (100). The initial solutions (Sinit1,..., SinitNt) are hard-mapped to the nearest possible symbols of transmission (Sest1,..., SestNt). For each of the nearest possible symbols limited areas around them in the constellation plane are defined. A list of candidate symbol vectors (list) is then determined, including only symbols lying within the limited areas of the constellation plane. Finally, a joint decoding technique such as ML-technique is implemented to determine the best of the candidate symbol vectors. The number of the calculations can thus be significantly reduced, without having excessively damaging effects on the symbol error rate.

A method for receiving signals in a multi-carrier multiple access system is disclosed. The method comprises receiving signals from at least one base station wherein each signal has a base station identifier, processing the signals to identify each base station by using the base station identifier, performing a channel estimation using the processed signals, combining the processed signals using an information obtained form the channel estimation and decoding the combined signals. Also, an apparatus for receiving signals in a multi-carrier multiple access system comprises a serial-to-parallel converter (41 ) for converting a serial signal including a base station identifier from al least one base station to parallel signals, a Fast Fourier transformer (42) for transforming the parallel signals, a parallel-to-serial converter (43) for converting the parallel signals to a serial signal, a dispreading processor (44) for dispreading frequency domain signals using the base station identifier form at least one base station, a channel estimator (45) for compensating a channel variation between the at least one base station and a mobile station, a signal combiner (46) for combining signals from base stations and a decoder (47) for decoding the combined signal.

In one embodiment, the post-channel estimate phase corrector includes a pilot sequence coordinator configured to receive a pattern of pilot sequences from the M receive antennas during data symbol time periods. The post-channel estimate phase corrector also includes a phase calculator coupled to the pilot sequence coordinator and configured to calculate phase corrections for individual channel estimates based on the pattern of pilot sequences.
