摘要: A light emitting electronic device has a substrate (10) of transparent intrinsic diamond material with a p-type region (14) formed in it by implantation of boron ions. Discrete transparent layers (16, 18, 20) of diamond material are deposited over the p-type region, each with different electrical characteristics. Transparent conductive contacts (24, 26, 28) are formed above the transparent layers, which are separated by a transparent insulation layer (22), and a conductive contact (29) is applied to the p-type region of the substrate. The different regions of the device emit different colours of light. Various different embodiments and methods of making the device are described.

摘要: A radiation detector element which is optimised for the detection of α particles comprises a layer (10) of diamond or diamond-like carbon with first and second electrical contacts (14, 16; 18) applied to the surface of the layer. The layer is formed on a silicon substrate (12), together with an electronic circuit (T₁, T₂, T₃). Each of the contacts (14, 16; 18) defines a rectifying junction with the layer (10), thus defining a back-to-back diodic structure, having junction characteristics which are responsive to the intensity of radiation incident on the detector element. The electronic circuit is powered by a battery (24) or a solar cell (28), and activates an LCD indicator (26) if the intensity of the incident radiation exceeds a predetermined level. The radiation detector element and the electronic circuit are housed on a card (22) which is sized similarly to a conventional identification card.

摘要: A method is provided for determining a characteristic such as the temperature of a medium. This medium will typically be a fluid and preferably be a liquid. The method involves providing a layer (10, 32, 50) of a conductive or semi-conductive material, placing the layer (10, 32, 50) in thermal contact with the medium, causing a voltage pulse to be applied to the layer (10, 32, 50), determining the rate of change of a response induced by the voltage pulse, e.g. the rate of change of a current induced by the voltage pulse, comparing that rate of change with a standard and using that comparison to make the characteristic determination.

摘要: A method is provided which bonds a composite abrasive compact (10, 12) to cemented carbide pin (14). The method includes the steps locating a braze alloy (16) having a perforated metal material (20) embedded therein between a surface (22) of the composite abrasive compact (10, 12) and a surface (18) of the cemented carbide pin (14). The braze alloy (16) has a melting point below that of th metal material (20). The surfaces (18, 22) are urged together, the temperature of the braze alloy (16) is raised to above its melting point and maintained at this temperature for a short period. The alloy (16) is then allowed to cool and solidify and bond the surfaces (18, 22) together.
