    摘要: A diamond film is grown on a substrate by providing a non-diamond substrate which has a face-centred cubic (fcc) crystal structure and small crystal lattice mismatch with the lattice of diamond, implanting carbon atoms into the crystal lattice of the substrate and causing the implanted carbon atoms to diffuse out of the substrate and grow epitaxially on the surface of the substrate. The preferred substrate is an fcc metal such as copper, nickel, fcc iron, fcc cobalt or fcc chromium.

    摘要: A composite radiation detection and indicating device comprises first, third and fifth layers (10,12,14) of a transparent conductive material, a second layer (16) of semiconductive diamond between the first and third layers, and a fourth layer (18) of liquid crystal material between the third and fifth layers. The layers are sandwiched together so that a diodic structure (20) having a radiation-dependent charge storage characteristic is defined by the first, second and third layers, and a liquid crystal display element (22) is defined by the third, fourth and fifth layers. The invention extends to a radiation detector including the composite device, together with an oscillator (24) for applying a charge to the diodic structure, and a sensor (T2) for monitoring the decay of the stored charge. A voltage is applied to the liquid crystal display element (22) to cause it to change state when the charge stored by the diodic structure decays below a predetermined limit.

    摘要: The invention provides a method of making an abrasive product which comprises a layer of bonded ultra-hard abrasive particles bonded to a substrate. The abrasive product is typically a diamond or cubic boron nitride composite compact. The method includes the steps of:

    (a) providing a substrate (10) which has a surface (14) to which the layer of bonded ultra-hard abrasive particles is to be bonded;
    (b) providing a slurry of the components, in particulate form, necessary to make the layer of bonded ultra-hard abrasive particles in a liquid medium adapted to flow and to set to a green state under predetermined conditions;
    (c) applying a layer (18) of the slurry to the surface (14) of the substrate (10);
    (d) applying the predetermined conditions during step (c) or immediately thereafter to cause the liquid medium to set to a green state;
    (e) contacting the green state layer (18) with a complemental surface (22) provided on a pressure pad (20);
    (f) removing substantially all the liquid medium from the green state layer (18);
    (g) placing the substrate/pressure pad combination in the reaction zone of a high temperature/high pressure apparatus; and
    (h) applying conditions of elevated temperature and pressure to the combination to convert the green state layer (18) into a layer of bonded ultra-hard abrasive particles which is bonded to the substrate (10).

    摘要: The invention provides apparatus for measuring nuclear radiation. The apparatus includes a probe (10) which comprises a synthetic diamond (12) and a FET pre-amplifier (TR1, TR2). A DC bias voltage is applied across the diamond and the pre-amplifier amplifies pulse or conduction signals from the diamond due to incident radiation. The pre-amplifier provides a first output having only an AC component, and a second output having both an AC and a DC component. A DC feedback stage (36) applies a feedback signal to the input of the pre-amplifier to improve its dynamic range.
