摘要: This invention relates to a number of components, devices and networks involving integrated optics and/or half coupler technology, all of which involve the use of electronically switchable Bragg grating devices and device geometries realized using holographic polymer/dispersed liquid crystal materials. Most of the components and devices are particularly adapted for use in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems and in particular for use in switchable add/drop filtering (SADF) and wavelength selective crossconnect. Attenuators, outcouplers and a variety of other devices are also provided.

摘要: A switchable waveguide (200, 250, 300) having first and second states. In the first state, the waveguide (200, 250, 300) guides light of a signal wavelength along a predetermined path. In the second state, no guiding of the light occurs. The waveguide (200, 250, 300) includes a guide layer (110) of a guide material having a first index of refraction in the absence of an electric field and a second index of refraction in the presence of the electric field. The electric field is generated in a portion of the guide layer (110) by applying an appropriate electrical signal to a plurality of electrodes (213, 214, 23, 24, 25, 32, 33, 34) that define a guide region (24, 37, 218) in the guide layer (110). The guide region (24, 37, 218) has an index of refraction that is greater than that of the guide layer (110) in regions adjacent to the guide region (24, 37, 218). The electrodes (213, 214, 23, 24, 25, 32, 33, 34) are separated from the guide region (24, 37, 218) by a distance of at least one-half times the wavelength of the light being guided. The separation is maintained by arranging the electrodes such that the guide region (24, 37,218) is created at a location separated from the electrodes.

摘要: An integrated optical combination splitting device, in particular for applications in the wavelength range of visible light, which ensures a spatial, broadband concentration of light in a wavelength range Δμ greater than approximately 75 nm (valid for short-wave visible light). For a useful wavelength range comprising all visible light, a white-light splitting device is provided. The combination splitting device consists of at least three strip waveguides, at least one of which being a single-mode integrated optical broadband strip waveguide (EOBSW). Two strip waveguides (2, 3) each have an entry point (E1, E2) and are joined at their exit points (A1, A2) in a coupling point (6) to become a joint EOBSW (5) having a common light exit (AM) at its end. This broadband combination splitting device can be used as a wavelength-selective or wavelength-independent switch or modulator in interferometric and photometric arrangements, sensors and microsystem solutions.

摘要: An optical circuit system which takes out a part of light from an optical power-supply according to at least one kind of the output voltages of an IC, board, multi-chip module, electronic element, and opto-electronic element and generates a light signal. In this system, the optical power-supply is an optical waveguide, a waveguide laser, or a waveguide optical amplifier to which light is directed, and a light reflecting part is provided at its end and/or in its intermediate part. There is formed a signal transmission waveguide which is in contact with the side and/or the upper and lower faces of the optical waveguide or which is closely located to the optical waveguide at an interval. Thus, optical signals corresponding to at least one kind of an IC, board, multi-chip module, electronic element, and opto-electronic element are propagated in the signal transmission waveguide. This optical circuit system and the constituents have sufficient flexibilities and meet complicated optical interconnection.

摘要: The present invention relates to a NxN single-mode optical coupler (10, 26) employing evanescent wave coupling between mutually adjacent optical waveguides (11) sufficiently close to one another to facilitate coupling among all the waveguides. An optical signal of a narrow frequency band, e.g. appreciably less than 100 gigahertz, introduced to an input port (15i) of one of the waveguides is found to be nonuniformly distributed among the output ports (16) of the coupler. A first embodiment uses the nonuniform distributions of narrowband optical signals to the output ports of the coupler to enable the present invention to be used as essentially a selective switching device. A second embodiment introduces one or more predetermined broadband optical signals to one or more input ports of the coupler to produce an appreciably uniform power distribution among the output ports of the coupler. A third embodiment uses electrooptic or magnetooptic waveguides and the application of a high-frequency, continuously changing magnitude, oscillatory electric or magnetic field (17), respectively, throughout the coupling region of the waveguides to produce a substantially uniform power distribution among the output ports of the coupler for a narrowband optical signal applied to an input port of the coupler.
