A disk drive includes a cast base 5 which supports the spindle assembly and the actuator assembly, and a cover 11 that is loosely received by the cast base to form the head-disk enclosure. The cover is secured and sealed to the cast base by a malleable metal foil tape 30 that surrounds the enclosure and continuously overlies the interface between cover and base. The tape complies with the surface irregularities and does not creep, to provide permanent shielding and sealing between base and cover. Cable exiting the enclosure is sealed using a piece of double sided adhesive between the cable and the casting, with the malleable foil tape thereover. Thus no significant thickness is added to the enclosure by the tape, which also provides noise and EMC shielding in addition to securing and sealing the cover.

Deteriorated or aged magnetic recording media exhibiting undesirable properties such as shed, stickiness or squeal are restored to playable condition having no such objectionable properties by heating the media to an elevated temperature and for lengths of time sufficient to restore the media. A typical temperature used is 54°C and a typical effective time is 16 hours. Ambient humidity is suitable. The restored media can be used to transfer data or information to new media. Restored media can also be again heat treated for restoration purposes, if it deteriorates again.

In a magnetic disk file having a plurality of disks and a source of organic lubricant mounted within a housing, an air flow stream recirculates within the housing. The vapor pressure of the lubricant source is controlled to provide vapor phase transport of lubricant molecules between the source and the disks' recording surfaces. The lubricant molecules bidirectionally transfer between the air stream and the source, and between the air stream and the surface of the disks, as is needed to maintian a nomo-molecular lubricant film, in the range of about 3 to 15 angstroms, on the disks in accordance with the principle of Langmuir kinetics. The disks are rigid disks and their recording surface includes a carbon overcoat. This overcoat has an affinity for the airborne organic lubricant molecules. In a first embodiment, the vapor pressure of the lubricant is controlled by mounting the material at the coolest location within the housing. In a second embodiment, the lubricant is carried as a mono-molecular layer of lubricant on granular carbon particles which have a surface area that is many times greater than the surface area of the disks. In a third embodiment, the vapor pressure is controlled by combining the lubricant with a vapor pressure diluent.
