A gas diffusion electrode is now prepared which offers extended, efficient operation. For this, the electrode matrix may include a hydrophobic layer containing hydrophobic polymer. The electrode has hydrophilic ingredient of particulate carbon bound by hydrophilic, halogenated polymer binder. The particulate carbon used is a catalyzed carbon. The resulting efficient electrode is capable of extended operation. Moreover, on the one hand carbon catalysis can now be done in economical, straightforward manner, while on the other hand the electrode can have a surface overlay of a dimensionally stable, thin non-cellulosic paper. Such paper may be pressed against the underlying component material by a foraminous overlay, e.g., a metal mesh.

A battery assembly of the consumable metal anode type has now been constructed for ready assembly as well as disassembly. In a non-conductive and at least substantially inert cell body, space is provided for receiving an open-structured, non-consumable anode cage. The cage has an open top for facilitating insertion of an anode. A modular cathode is used, comprising a peripheral current conductor frame clamped about a grid reinforced air cathode in sheet form. The air cathode may be double gridded. The cathode frame can be sealed, during assembly, with electrolyte. resistant-sealant as well as with adhesive. The resulting cathode module can be assembled outside the cell body and readily inserted therein, or can later be easily removed therefrom.

A blend of fluorocarbon polymers for incorporation into an asbestos fiber slurry for forming into a diaphragm is disclosed. The blend comprises fluorocarbon polymer fibers and fluorocarbon polymer chunks of certain sizes in certain weight ratios. Also disclosed is a diaphragm comprised of the asbestos and two types of fluorocarbon polymers, as well as a method of making same.

A coating comprising aluminum and at least one of the transition metals of the groups IVB, VB and VIB are prepared comprising a unique microstructure which may be a solid solution of the transition metal in an aluminide matrix or a pseudo solid solution of the transition metal in an aluminum matrix. By means of special processes a super fine distribution of the transition metal within the matrix may be obtained in the form of a metastable pseudo solid solution even though thermodynamic considerations disfavour such fine distributions. The coating may, with advantage, be applied to superalloys and be heat treated together with the substrate in order to form a stable aluminide coating comprising transition metal dispersions in an aluminide matrix. One of the preferred manufacturing processes of such coatings is the electrodeposition thereof from non-aqueous electrolytes.

A solid electrolyte cell comprises an alkali metal anode e.g. lithium, a halogen-containing organic polymer cathode and a solid electrolyte between the anode and the cathode. The cathode comprises iodine-containing vacuum cyclised polyacrylonitrile and the solid electrolyte is preferably lithium iodide and halogen-free vacuum cyclised polyacrylonitrile. Use of isotactic polyacrylonitrile, a method of making a cathode comprising iodine-containing vacuum cyclised polyacrylonitrile and navel methods of making the solid electrolyte cells comprising an alkali metal anode e.g. lithium, a halogen-containing organic polymer cathode and a solid electrolyte between the anode and the cathode are also disclosed.

A lightweight cover provides heat insulation for a heated vessel such as a soaking pit. The cover has a pair of opposing frame members (47) with ceramic fiber insulation (14) positioned therebetween. The insulation is secured in movable engagement such as a free-floating and swinging engagement. In this mode, compression can be exerted against the insulation (14) to most desirably reduce heat loss otherwise caused by heat induced ceramic fiber shrinkage. Moverover, with this structure a ceramic fiber heat seal can be achieved around edges of the soaking pit.
