An electronically controlled syringe system (14a) for connection to a balloon catheter or other balloon-type member and for automatically monitoring, displaying and recording inflation data when the syringe system is used to inflate the balloon of the catheter or other balloon-type member. A syringe (16) having a barrel (22) and a syringe plunger (24) is selectively operable to increase fluid pressure applied to the balloon catheter or other balloon member by sliding the plunger (24) further into the barrel (22). Positive pressure applied to the balloon catheter or member is released by withdrawing the syringe plunger (24) toward the rear of the barrel (22). A piezoresistive semiconductor transducer housed on the barrel (22) of the syringe (16) senses fluid pressure applied by the syringe. The electric signal output by the transducer is input to a controller (20a) where the signal is digitally processed so as to derive and record therefrom electronic data representing the magnitude of applied fluid pressure, and so as also to derive the length of time that fluid pressure is applied. The electronic data representing this information is automatically displayed and recorded. In one embodiment, the controller (20a) is also mounted onto the syringe barrel (22) to provide a digitally controlled inflation syringe system that is completely self-contained, and disposable.

Providing fluid to an internal delivery site of a patient includes moving the fluid from a fluid reservoir through a conduit and through a delivery device at the delivery site while maintaining the fluid at a predetermined pressure. The delivery device may comprise an inflatable balloon with apertures formed in its periphery for directing the fluid into the vessel walls. Pressurized fluid is provided through the apertures of the balloon to the vessel wall. The pressure is automatically controlled to avoid both pressure spikes and unacceptable deflation of the balloon during administration of the fluid. A further feature includes comparing the pressure with the volume infused and in the event that pressure decreases while the volume infused increases beyond certain limits, the delivery of the fluid is stopped. Further features include a timer for limiting the inflation time of the delivery device and a volume detector for controlling the amount of fluid delivered. In one described embodiment, a pneumatic driver system is used to pressurize the fluid.

A coronary sinus catheter (12) for the retrograde infusion of cardioplegia solutions into the coronary sinus. The catheter (12) is adapted for improved retention in the coronary sinus. The catheter (12) comprises a catheter tube (18) having infusion, pressure-sensing and balloon-inflation lumens, an inflatable balloon (16) and a pressure sensor tube (24) in fluid communication with the balloon-inflation lumen for sensing pressure in the inflatable balloon (16). The internal volume of the pressure sensor tube (24) is relatively non-expansible relative to the internal volume of the inflation balloon (16) in normal operation of the catheter (12). Other aspects of the invention include a constricted portion in the infusion lumen that is believed to eliminate spraying of fluid through the infusion lumen outlet(s) (34), and a temperature sensor strip (74) providing a display on the catheter (12) of the temperature of the infused fluid.

The present invention is a fluid injecting device (10). It is comprised of an elongated housing (12) having an inner bore (13) and a piston (16) slidably disposed therein. Attached to the piston (16) is an elongated piston rod (18) one end of which extends out of the housing (12). The rod (18) has a threaded intermediate section which engages a plurality of opposed threaded members. With this construction longitudinal movement of the piston (16) within the bore (13) is effected by rotating the piston rod (18). The invention also includes means to move the opposed threaded members to a second position spaced away from the piston rod (18) and disengaged therefrom. In this fashion longitudinal movement of the piston (16) within the bore (13) is effected by pushing or pulling on the piston rod (18).
