Processes for preparing N,N,N-trimethylethanolammonium hydroxide (choline hydroxide) and the choline hydroxide produced are described. These processes minimize the production of byproduct mono-ethoxylated and di-ethyoxylated choline in the product choline hydroxide. The processes generally include feeding ethylene oxide, trimethylamine, and water into a first reactor to create a first reactor product under temperature controlled conditions. The product of the first reactor is fed into a second reactor to form a second reactor product under uncontrolled, adiabatic, conditions. Finally, any unreacted trimethylamine in the second reactor product is removed to form a final product comprising choline hydroxide. Additional reactors can be used for the ethylene oxide and trimethylamine reaction.

A continuous process for the production of choline hydroxide includes reacting ethylene oxide, trimethylamine, and water in a reaction zone to form a reaction mixture and extracting heat from the reaction mixture. Subsequently, phase separation of the reaction mixture is induced to obtain a choline hydroxide phase and an organic liquid phase comprising trimethylamine. A choline hydroxide solution (e.g., at a concentration of about 40% to 50% by weight, based on total weight of the choline hydroxide solution) is obtained from the choline hydroxide phase.

A method for the production of ethanol amines comprises the steps of adding ammonia, ethylene oxide and water to a reactor (10). In the reactor, the ethylene oxide is reacted to a reaction product comprising a monoethanolamine, a diethanolamine and a triethanolamine. An ammonia stripper (20) for stripping the ammonia from the reaction product is provided. The reaction product is further concentrated in an evaporator (30) by evaporating water. The concentrated reaction product (31) is fed to a distillation plant (40) for separating the triethanolamine from the monoethanolamine and diethanolamine. The ammonia stripped from the reaction product (11) is fed to an ammonia absorber (100) for recycling the ammonia to the reactor (10).
