A unit for detecting a moving person or object by means of doppler frequency shift. The unit comprises a microwave circuit board (1) accommodating an oscillator and a mixer, and an antenna board (2) carrying transmit (8) and receive (7) patch arrays. In the assembled unit the two boards (1, 2) are intimately secured together. Coupling between the microwave circuit and the antenna arrays is achieved by two slots (5, 6) resonant at the oscillator fundamental frequency, formed in the ground plane (4) of the microwave board (1). Feed striplines (9, 10, 17, 19) on the two boards lie orthogonal to and sandwich the slots (5, 6). The stripline/slot arrangement suppresses emission at the oscillator second harmonic frequency.

A display arrangement comprises an image intensifier tube 1 or some other device which provides a representation of a viewed scene at 3. A supertwist LCD 4 and associated polarisers 5 and 6 are located between the output 3 and a viewer 7. A ferroelectric liquid crystal shutter 11 is located between the LCD 4 and second polariser 6. The LCD 4 is controlled to produce symbology. By switching the shutter 11 the polarisation of the incident radiation is switched between two states differing by 90°. This causes the LCD 4 to operate in two states. In one state the viewed scene is transmitted through the LCD 4 and in the other state it is absorbed and any symbology on the LCD 4 is contrasted with a dark absorbing background. The shutter 11 is switched sufficiently quickly that the observer 7 perceives the symbology overlaid on the viewed scene.

A device for generating optical signals is suitable in optical radiation shaping networks for micro-wave antennae, dispensing with the previously required costly circuits. The output currents from a linear arrangement of separate photodiodes are summed into a single electric transmission line. Implementation examples are disclosed.
