An under floor lift comprising a horizontal, U-shaped header frame (A) which is mountable above a vehicle axle and below the floor, and which reciprocatingly receives a nestable carriage (B) comprising a second U-shaped framework. The carriage (B) comprises a transverse motor mount plate (10) and a pair of spaced, horizontal arms (12, 14) between which is received the lift platform (D). An inboard bridge plate/barrier (20) is mounted on C-shaped tubular channels (26) which slide on steel rods or rails (24) which are in turn mounted on a support plate (22) pivotably mounted to the outboard edge of the motor mount plate (10) of the carriage assembly (B). The combination of the barrier/bridge plate (20) and the slider/support plate assembly (22) provides excellent stability to the lift mechanism, essentially eliminating lateral sway and the problems attendant thereto.

A safety barrier for wheelchair lifts is disclosed, and more particularly a safety barrier assembly (10) which can be used singly or in opposed pairs to open automatically and mechanically in cafe-style, rotating 90° from a first closed or barrier position to a second, open, pass-through position. More particularly, these barriers may be used as barriers on wheelchair lift platforms (24) or at the door opening of a van or transit vehicles on which a wheelchair lift is mounted. The barriers (32) typically are shaped like the letter P with the lower most barrier member being spaced from twelve inches to two feet above the floor, and which are designed to prevent wheelchairs from rolling out of the van when the platform (24) has left the transfer level (vehicle floor), and as a safety barrier in the case of runaway wheelchair events. The preferred embodiment of the gate is mounted to a pivotal cam slot/bias spring assembly (14) which provides for stable open and shut positions with spring/gravity assisted closure. The preferred embodiment also includes a safety interlock switch circuit which prevents lift platform motion when the gate barrier is open.

Improved sliding door header and sill assemblies for vans and other vehicles are disclosed which permit increased vertical doorway clearance which is particularly useful to permit entry/exit of handicapped persons, especially wheelchair users. The principal embodiment has a horizontal header plate (4) adjacent the top of the door opening having a longitudinal roller guide slot (5) with a straight aft section and a forward section curved inward to guide the door as it slides between an aft open position along the vehicle side and a forward closed position within the door opening. The door is supported at its upper portion by a floating or pivoted roller arm (7) which mounts a dumbbell shaped roller (8) engaging the header slot (5). The roller (8) and arm (7) are selectably releasable from the header slot through a hole (6) located in the header plate (4). The release hole (6) intersects the inside edge (47) of an intermediate portion of the guide slot (5) to form a passage (27) between the guide slot (5) and the release hole (6). The engaged center portion (25) of the roller (8) is sized to "snap-fit" or move through this passage (27) upon application of positive force, to facilitate mounting/demounting of the door by insertion/removal of the roller (8) through the release hole (6). The lower portion of the door is supported by a sill (19) incorporating a similarly shape guide slot engaging a roller mounted to an arm assembly (22) which is fixed or optionally restrictedly pivoted, so that the arm supports the vertical forces on the door.
