    摘要: A bracket and washer combination (10) providing secure holding and positioning of a magnetic sensor (12), wherein an optimal air gap (G) is automatically set as the washer (30) is brought into a slot (28) of the bracket (26) due to facial interaction therebetween. In one embodiment, the sidewalls (38,40) of the slot (28') have teeth (42) of predetermined pitch, while the washer (30) has smooth sidewalls (46,48). In a second embodiment, the sidewalls of the washer (46',48') have teeth (42') of a predetermined pitch angle, while the sidewalls of the slot (38',40') are smooth. The member having toothed sidewalls is formed of a material harder than the member having smooth sidewalls. The washer and slot are dimensioned so that the sidewalls of the washer tightly abut the sidewalls of the slot, wherein the teeth of the toothed sidewalls inscribe corresponding grooves into the smooth sidewalls as the washer is pressed into the slot along a transverse axis (T). Consequently, as the corresponding grooves are inscribed, the washer sidewalls are caused to move in relation to the slot sidewalls in a direction parallel to the pitch of the teeth, resulting in a relative movement between the washer and the bracket along a longitudinal axis (L). However, since the washer is affixed by a bolt (32) so that it is constrained from moving along the longitudinal axis (L), the relative movement is provided by the bracket (26) moving along the longitudinal axis (L) in relation to the washer (30). The distance of relative movement along the longitudinal axis is given by: D*tan(A) = G, wherein D is the depth of penetration of the washer into the slot along the transverse axis (T), A is the pitch angle of the teeth of the toothed sidewall, and G is the distance of movement of the bracket along the longitudinal axis (L) and is equal to the desired optimum air gap (G).

    摘要: A rotation sensor for high accuracy angle applications such as internal combustion engine crankshaft position sensing includes a pair of complementary target wheels (25A,25B) and a dual-element magnetoresistive sensor (11). The target wheels (25A,25B) are paced from one another along the rotational axis (Ar) by a predetermined distance (L). The individual magnetoresistive elements (MR1,MR2) are similarly spaced one from the other (2d) and are influenced by the ferrite effects of the target wheels. The spacing of the target wheels and magnetoresistive elements are selected in relation to one another and in relation to the amount of axial play in the crankshaft such that changes in ferrite effects of the target wheels upon the elements due to axial displacement (Δ) of the crankshaft have minimal effect on the accuracy of the sensing apparatus.

    摘要: A magnetized or unmagnetized body (10) of a permanent magnet material is heated in a pattern by a laser beam (18) to a temperature sufficient to lower the magnetic coercivity of selected heated regions of the pattern and then exposed to a magnetic field to magnetize or to re-magnetize the selected heated regions. A pattern guide (30) is used in the process to densify the pattern. In the process, energy (18) is directed through the pattern guide (30) and onto the selected regions, whilst the pattern guide (30) prevents or minimizes heating of unselected portions of the body (10). Magnets so produced can have very high pole density, digital encoding and analog patterns having gradually varying local field strength.

    摘要: An apparatus for detecting precise angular positions of a rotating object. Two magnetoresistors (MRs) (24) and (26) are positioned adjacent a target wheel (10) attached to the rotating object, the target wheel having at least one element (12),(14),(16) and (18) of finite length. Each MR is responsive to the passage of at least one of the elements as the target wheel is rotated, generating an analog signal with signal transitions between two voltage levels at the passage of the element's leading and trailing edges. The MRs are positioned relative to the elements such that their signals are phase shifted with respect to one another, resulting in time overlapping signals which intersect at a precise angular positions of the target wheel.
