A rolling mill has a work roll (1), a back-up roll (2) for supporting the work roll (1) vertically and driving it. A plurality of horizontal support rollers (4,6) contact the work roll at barrel diameter outside the rolling region and at both horizontal sides of the work roll and act to fix the position of the work roll in both horizontal directions during rolling and to oppose horizontal rolling forces. In order to reduce the bending of the work roll during rolling, there are provided means for applying horizontal counterbending forces to the work roll comprising members (5,7) e.g. rollers, contacting the work roll at locations axially further from the rolling region than the support rollers (4,6) and actuator means (14) for urging the members (5,7) against the work roll. The counterbending forces being in the same direction as the net horizontal force applied to said work roll by said back-up roll and the material being rolled. Preferably at least one condition of said work roll is sensed during rolling, and there are control means acting during rolling to control the counterbending forces in dependence on the sensed condition.

In a continuous hot rolling system, at least one melt-cut torch (6) is set in a predetermined positional relationship with respect to a trailing end of a preceding hot material (1) and a leading end of an adjacent succeeding hot material (2). An injected flow of cutting gas from the melt-cut torch (6) is blown against at least one of the ends to melt-cut the portion. The ends of the materials are forced against each other and are butt-joined to each other. Joining may be made with respect to slabs before rough rolling, or may be made with respect to bars after rough rolling. A slab manufactured by a continuous casting machine is reduced in thickness at a plurality of desired portions. Cutting and joining is made at these portions. Furthermore, the ends, after having been cut, are reduced in thickness with the ends abutted against each other to form thickness-reduced portions. These portions are joined to each other.

A lubricant is supplied from headers (38) of lubricant supply units (5) onto surfaces of back-up rolls (3) at locations spaced from contact positions between a pair of work rolls (2) and a pair of back-up rolls (3). The headers (38) each include a lubricant spray nozzle (41) for spraying the lubricant under a pressure not lower than 3 kg/cm², a header cover (42) for confining the lubricant sprayed from the lubricant spray nozzle (41), an oil return line (44) for returning the surplus lubricant, and seal members (43) made of flexible material such as rubber. The work rolls (2) are provided with water wiping plates (6), and the back-up rolls (3) are also provided with water wiping plates (7). In a work rolls crossing type mill thus arranged, water films of cooling water deposited on the roll surfaces are removed to prevent the cooling water from mixing into the lubricant. Even if the water films are not totally removed, it is possible to surely plate out the lubricant for reliably lubricating between the work rolls (2) and the back-up rolls (3). Raw lubricant oil of the lubricant meets the following requirements; (a) the coefficient of friction between said work rolls (2) and said back-up rolls (3) is in the range of 0.04 to 0.1, (b) the viscosity is not larger than 80 Cst. at 40 °C, (c) mineral oil and synthetic ester not less than 5 % are contained as base oil, (d) a fatty acid in the range of 0.03 to 0.5 % is contained as an oiliness enhancer, (e) an extreme pressure additive not less than 0.1 % is contained, and preferably, (f) a surface active agent not larger than 0.5 % is contained as emulsifier.

A widthwise bend of an end of a hot-rolled elongate sheet-shaped metal product (1) is corrected while it is hot. The correction comprises simultaneously: (i) holding the edges of the product (1) at at least two positions (12,13) longitudinally spaced along the product thereby to hold, at least laterally, a portion spaced from the bent end, and (ii)pushing the end portion laterally by means of a laterally moving member (14). The method may be performed while the product is continuously moving along a path. Both steps (i) and (ii) are performed by rollers rotatable about vertical axes.
