A rolling mill has a work roll (1), a back-up roll (2) for supporting the work roll (1) vertically and driving it. A plurality of horizontal support rollers (4,6) contact the work roll at barrel diameter outside the rolling region and at both horizontal sides of the work roll and act to fix the position of the work roll in both horizontal directions during rolling and to oppose horizontal rolling forces. In order to reduce the bending of the work roll during rolling, there are provided means for applying horizontal counterbending forces to the work roll comprising members (5,7) e.g. rollers, contacting the work roll at locations axially further from the rolling region than the support rollers (4,6) and actuator means (14) for urging the members (5,7) against the work roll. The counterbending forces being in the same direction as the net horizontal force applied to said work roll by said back-up roll and the material being rolled. Preferably at least one condition of said work roll is sensed during rolling, and there are control means acting during rolling to control the counterbending forces in dependence on the sensed condition.

In a continuous hot strip rolling system in which bars are joined between a roughing train (1) and a finishing train (2) for continuous rolling, the roughing train (1) includes two two-high twin-roll arranged stands (3,4) each having two pairs of work rolls. The four two-high mills provided by the two twin-roll arranged stands (3,4) including four pairs of work rolls are disposed close to each other so as to provide a tandem rolling in which a material to be rolled is rolled simultaneously by the two adjacent mills. A slab (22) having a thickness of 200 to 240 mm is rolled by the two twin-roll arranged stands (3,4) to obtain a bar of about 80 mm. A width press (9) is provided near the entrance of the No. 1 stand. A descaling device (16,17) is provided at the entrance of each of the two stands (3,4). The descaling device (16,17) has a nozzle (30) which is movable in the direction transverse to the direction of travel of the material to be rolled. A non-driven roll edger (18,19) is provided at the exit of each of the two stands (3,4). Thus, generation of camber in the roughing rolling process can be reduced, and stable joining continuous rolling can be conducted. Furthermore, the overall length of the system can be reduced, and reduction in the bar temperature, which occurs until the bar reaches the joining position, can be lessened. Rational bar joining can be conducted.

A rolling method in a multi-high rolling mill is applied to a multi-high rolling mill including upper and lower work rolls of substantially the same diameter, upper and lower backup rolls supporting the work rolls, respectively, and an intermediate roll located between one of the upper and lower work rolls and the associated backup roll, wherein roll bending devices installed on the intermediate roll and roll bending devices installed on the work roll in the roll set where the intermediate roll is disposed are all actuated to control a composite sheet of a rolled material over its entire width, and roll bending devices installed on the work roll which is directly supported by the backup roll are actuated to control the sheet crown of the rolled material at its side end portions, thereby performing both the composite shape control of the rolled material and the control of the widths of the side end portions of the rolled material which are not to be rolled.
