Disclosed is a novel aromatic amine derivative having an asymmetric structure. Also disclosed is an organic electroluminescent device wherein an organic thin film layer composed of one or more layers including at least a light-emitting layer is interposed between a cathode and an anode and at least one layer of the organic thin film layer contains the aromatic amine derivative by itself or as a component of a mixture. This organic electroluminescent device hardly suffers from crystallization of molecules, and has improved production yield and long life. The aromatic amine derivative enables to realize such an organic electroluminescent device.

Disclosed are a novel polycyclic aromatic compound having a specific structure and a material for forming a luminescent coating film which is composed of an organic solvent solution containing such a polycyclic aromatic compound. Also disclosed is an organic electroluminescent (EL) device wherein an organic thin film layer composed of one or more layers including at least a light-emitting layer is interposed between a cathode and an anode. Such an organic EL device has high luminous efficiency and long life, since the polycyclic aromatic compound is contained, by itself or as a component of a mixture, in at least one layer of the organic thin film layer of the organic EL device.

Examples of the arylenediamine derivative are a p-phenylenediamine derivative having four biphenyl groups and a 4,4'-biphenylenediamine derivative having five biphenyl groups.

Disclosed is a material for organic electroluminescent devices which is composed of a compound having a specific structure. Also disclosed is an organic electroluminescent device which comprises an organic thin film layer composed of one or more layers including at least a light-emitting layer and interposed between a cathode and an anode, wherein at least one layer of the organic thin film layer contains the material for organic electroluminescent devices. The material for organic electroluminescent devices enables to provide an organic electroluminescent device having a high luminous efficiency, excellent heat resistance and long life while having no pixel defects. Also disclosed is an organic electroluminescent device using such a material for organic electroluminescent devices.

There is provided an organic electroluminescence (EL) device comprising a negative electrode and a positive electrode and, interposed therebetween, one or multiple organic compound layers including at least a luminescent layer, wherein at least one of the organic compound layers contains the above arylamine compound, or contains the arylamine compound together with a luminescent material, or wherein the organic compound layers include a laminate of a hole transport layer containing the arylamine compound and a luminescent layer composed of a phosphorescent metal complex and a host material. The organic EL device exhibits high luminance, high thermal stability, prolonged operating life, excellent hole transport and high luminous efficiency. The novel arylamine compound realizes the organic EL device.
