An object of the present invention is to provide a gel-like cosmetic material the viscosity of which is not easily reduced even in the presence of an electrolyte, the cosmetic material ensuring an unconventional jelly-like feel when being applied to the skin, and a smooth sensation after being applied to the skin. The present invention provides a gel-like composition comprising 0.3 to 3 mass% of an alkyl-modified carboxyl-group-containing water-soluble polymer, 3 to 20 mass% of a polyhydric alcohol, and 0.25 to 5 mass% of an inorganic salt, the alkyl-modified carboxyl-group-containing water-soluble polymer being (i) a polymer obtained by polymerizing a (meth)acrylic acid and a C 18-24 alkyl-containing (meth) acrylic acid alkyl ester, or (ii) a polymer obtained by polymerizing a (meta)acrylic acid, a C 18-24 alkyl-containing (meth)acrylic acid alkyl ester, and a compound having two or more ethylenically unsaturated groups.

A gelling agent capable of turning an electrolyte solution for an alkaline battery into a gel, which is less likely to cause syneresis, is composed of particles of a carboxyl group-containing polymer, and a 0.1% by weight aqueous solution has a viscosity of at least 3,000 mPa·s at a pH of 7. The particles of a carboxyl group-containing polymer are normally obtainable by polymerizing a polymerizable material containing α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids, for example, a polymerizable material containing α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids and a compound having two or more ethylenically unsaturated groups as a cross-linking agent, in an inert solvent which dissolves the α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids but does not dissolve particles of a carboxyl group-containing polymer. The above-mentioned viscosity is achieved by adjusting the balance among the concentration of the α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids, the concentration of a cross-linking agent and a polymerization temperature during polymerization.

The present invention provide a water-soluble copolymer having alkyl-modified carboxyl groups which is able to produce a neutralized viscous liquid in which although its viscosity is very low when no electrolyte exists, the viscosity greatly increases when electrolytes are added, which has a high viscosity and a high transmittance and which has moist textures without stickiness even in the presence of a relatively high concentration of electrolytes, and a thickening agent comprising the same. More specifically, the present invention provides a water-soluble copolymer having alkyl-modified carboxyl groups which is obtained by polymerizing 100 parts by weight of (meth)acrylic acid, 0.5-5 parts by weight of alkyl (meth)acrylate comprising an alkyl group having a carbon number of 18-24, and 0-0.1 parts by weight of a compound having two or more of ethylenic unsaturated groups, wherein a 1 weight %-neutralized viscous liquid shows a viscosity of 1500 mPa·s or lower and a transmittance of 90 % or higher, and when 0.25-5 parts by weight of sodium chloride is added to 100 parts by weight of the neutralized viscous liquid, the liquid shows a highest viscosity of 15000-40000 mPa·s and a transmittance of 90 % or higher, and a thickening agent comprising the same.
