In this case, the amount of the inert solvent charged in the reaction vessel is set so that the concentration of the monomer component in the total amount summed up with the monomer solution is 10 to 24% by volume, and the time period until completion of continuous addition of the total amount of the monomer solution is set so that the conversion of the monomer component at the time of completion of addition of the total amount of the monomer solution is 60% or more. The monomer component may contain a polymerizable compound having two or more ethylenically unsaturated groups.

The purpose of the present invention is to provide a viscous composition which is capable of achieving a high viscosity over a pH range from acidic to weakly acidic conditions even in the presence of a polyvalent metal salt by means of an alkyl-modified carboxyl group-containing water-soluble copolymer. A viscous composition, which is obtained by adjusting the pH of a liquid composition that contains a specific alkyl-modified carboxyl group-containing water-soluble copolymer, a polyvalent metal salt and water to 7.0 or more with use of a base, and then adjusting the pH of the resulting liquid composition to 2.5 - 6.5 with use of a carboxylic acid and/or a phosphorus oxo acid, is able to have a high viscosity.

The invention provides a process for producing a carboxyl-containing polymer composition that allows the possibility of obtaining a carboxyl-containing polymer composition which exhibits excellent dispersibility in water or the like, has a viscosity increasing to a lower degree compared to the viscosity of a neutralized viscous liquid using an additive-free carboxyl-containing polymer, and has a high degree of transparency in a neutralized viscous liquid thereof. A carboxyl-containing polymer composition is obtained by polymerizing a monomer containing an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid as a main component in a presence of a polyol (iso)stearic acid ester. A polyol in the polyol (iso)stearic acid ester is a polyol selected from a specific group, and the polyol (iso)stearic acid ester is used in the polymerization in an amount of 0.2 to 7 parts by mass based on 100 parts by mass of the α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid.

According to the copolymer of the present invention, a neutral viscous aqueous solution having a high viscosity can be formed even in the presence of an electrolyte in a relatively high concentration, without being affected by its temperature and electrolytic concentration; therefore, the copolymer of the present invention can be suitably used in cosmetics and the like.

Disclosed is a water-soluble copolymer having an alkyl-modified carboxyl group, which can form a viscous nutralizing solution having a satisfactorily high viscosity, an extremely high transmittance, no greasy feeling and a fresh texture even in the presence of a relatively high concentration of an electrolyte. Also disclosed is a thickening agent comprising the water-soluble copolymer. The water-soluble copolymer can be produced by polymerization of 100 parts by weight of (meth)acrylic acid, 5 to 10 parts by weight of lauryl (meth)acrylate and 0 to 0.1 part by weight of a compound having two or more ethylenically unsaturated groups. The water-soluble copolymer shows a viscosity of 1000 mPa·s or lower and a transmittance of 95% or higher when prepared into a viscous neutralizing solution containing 1% by weight of the water-soluble copolymer, and shows a maximum viscosity of 10000 to 30000 mPa·s and a transmittance of 95% or higher when 1 to 7 parts by weight of sodium chloride is added to 100 parts by weight of the viscous neutralizing solution.

The present invention provide a water-soluble copolymer having alkyl-modified carboxyl groups which is able to produce a neutralized viscous liquid in which although its viscosity is very low when no electrolyte exists, the viscosity greatly increases when electrolytes are added, which has a sufficiently high viscosity and a very high transmittance and which has moist textures without stickiness even in the presence of a relatively high concentration of electrolytes, and a thickening agent comprising the same. More specifically, the present invention proves a water-soluble copolymer having alkyl-modified carboxyl groups which is obtained by polymerizing 100 parts by weight of (meth)acrylic acid, 5-10 parts by weight of lauryl (meth)acrylate, and 0-0.1 parts by weight of a compound having two or more of ethylenic unsaturated groups, wherein a 1 weight %-neutralized viscous liquid shows a viscosity of 1000 mPa·s or lower and a transmittance of 95 % or higher, and when 1-7 parts by weight of sodium chloride is added to 100 parts by weight of the neutralized viscous liquid, the liquid shows a highest viscosity of 10000-30000 mPa·s and a transmittance of 95 % or higher, and a thickening agent comprising the same.
