The invention relates to a method for signal transmission in a bus system, superposed on a direct supply voltage. Previously in a bus system, voltage signals were sent to modules from the central unit and said modules could respond by altering the current input. This has the disadvantage that the current input, which already has to be kept relatively low due to the energy consumption, is relatively susceptible to faults and that the process of faultlessly detecting the signals sent by the modules in the central unit is complex, accordingly. According to the invention, the modules of the central unit also respond with voltage signals superposed on the direct supply voltage. The central unit delivers the direct supply voltage via a resistor of the bus line for the duration of the signal transmission through the modules so that the voltage signal of the modules can be detected in the central unit on the bus line, on the side of the resistor facing away from the direct supply voltage. The invention is particularly suitable for use for bus systems in motor vehicles, especially for a sensor data bus.

The invention relates to a method for transmitting power and data in a bus system (5) provided for occupant protection devices (1.1), whereby, by means of the bus system (5), digital data is exchanged between a central processing unit (7) and a plurality of control modules (6) of occupant protection devices (1.1) which can be triggered. Said occupant protection devices are especially used in motor vehicles. The control modules are connected to said central processing unit in a communicative manner. According to the inventive method, power is supplied to the control modules (6) via the bus system (5). The energy stores (1.4) provided in peripheral control modules (6) of occupant protection devices (1.1) are discharged when the occupant protection device is triggered. Said energy stores must be recharged again after the triggering action. However, the bus system which is also required for transmitting data is subjected to a heavy load if the recharging process occurs immediately after triggering. The dynamic bus system load can be avoided such that the transmission of data to other control modules can be additionally guaranteed. This is achieved by suppressing the recharging of the energy stores (1.4) of the triggered occupant protection devices (1.1), preferably until a reset instruction is given. The invention also relates to the application of the method especially in a bus system provided for occupant protection devices (1.1) used in motor vehicles.

The invention relates to an occupant protection system having a central unit, sensors and a plurality of control modules which are connected by means of a bus system so that they can communicate and which are provided for triggering occupant protection devices. In a large number of occupant protection systems, sensors and control modules provided for triggering occupant protection devices considerably increase the amount of wiring required when they are connected to a central unit in a communicative manner. For this reason, bus systems already exist for control modules provided for triggering occupant protection devices. The aim of the invention is to further reduce the amount of wiring required in a simple manner. To this end, the sensors are at least partially integrated in the bus system by means of additional control modules which are assigned to said sensors. In addition, an actual sensor value is sent as a diagnostic response from the control modules of the sensors to the bus system within the scope of a process of the diagnostic inquiry-diagnostic response which triggers a functional test of the control modules provided for triggering occupant protection devices. Said value is processed by the central unit and/or by the other control modules. The invention also relates to the use of these occupant protection systems in motor vehicles.
