A composite video input signal is combined with a noise reduction signal to form a noise reduced first video signal which is delayed by multiple time periods of (i) one line less one-half color cycle, (ii) one line and (iii) one line plus one-half color cycle to form respective ones of first, second and third time delayed signals. The first and third delayed signals are combined to form an average signal from which a subtractor substracts the composite video input signal. The resultant difference signal is limited to form the noise reduction signal. The noise reduced first video signal and the second delayed video signal are combined in an output circuit to provide noise reduced and separated chrominance and luminance output signals.

A first signal processor (304) speeds up the first video signal. The second video signal (306) is vertically synchronized with the first video signal. The second video signal is delayed by a fraction of a field period in a field memory. A second signal processor (306) speeds up the synchronized second video signal. The first and second video signals are combined for side-by-side display of the pictures. If the first and second display format ratios are each approximately 4:3 and the third display format ratio is approximately 16:9, each of the side-by-side pictures can be displayed in a format display ratio of approximately 8:9. If each of the video signals is speeded up by approximately 4/3 and cropped horizontally by approximately 1/3, each of the side-by-side pictures is displayed substantially without aspect ratio distortion.

A video display system, comprises a video display having a first format display ratio. A picture height circuit (1010) determines an active picture height from an input video signal having a second format display ratio. A detector circuit (1030) identifies letterbox formats responsive to the active picture height in the signal and determines a format display ratio of the letterbox picture. A zoom circuit (1032) is operable in a first mode for enlarging the picture in size to fill the display substantially entirely, and operable in a second mode for enlarging the picture in size to substantially fill the display vertically. A vertical pan circuit (1034) centers the picture. The detector can identify the format display ratio of the letterbox format picture. A deflection system (50) is controllable in vertical size by a variable vertical scan rate, in horizontal size by variable horizontal expansion and compression, and in pan position by varying the vertical reset in phase.
