摘要:
A breakout for a tube that is intended to carry optical fibres, comprises a body (1) having a channel (4) that extends along the body from one end to another end thereof and which furcates in a central region (5) thereof so that the channel has one outlet (6) at one end of the body and a plurality of outlets (7,7') at the other end. The breakout is capable of being stacked on one or more other breakouts and including one or more devices to enable it to be secured to such other breakout or breakouts. The breakout may be employed in optical fibre telephony systems where, for example, optical fibre bundles located in tubes need to be divided into smaller bundles as they are led into telephony racks.

A cable management system for use in a cabinet housing electronics and/or optical equipment located in a vertical array of horizontal racks comprises a vertical side wall (1) that can be located to one side of the racks, and has a plurality of cable holders (3) thereon. Each cable holder (3) extends from the front of the side wall (1) to a rear wall (2) of the system to allow a cable bundle to extend from the front of a rack to the rear wall, and each cable holder has a height that will accommodate sufficient slack cable bundle when its associated rack is in its normal operating position to enable the rack to be pulled out from the front of the cabinet by taking up the slack in the cable bundle. Preferably the cable holders (3) are in the form of enclosed pockets arranged in an array extending up the side wall, each pocket having openings (7,8) at its front and rear to allow the cable to extend through it and a side face that is removable to allow access to the cable. also clips may be provided along the rear wall to retain the cables against it. The system enables the cables to be readily accessible if work is need to be conducted on them with a reduced possibility of disrupting traffic on the other live cables.

An electric cable with limited fire survival characteristics comprises at least one insulated conductor insulated with silicone rubber or other organic insulant that leaves an insulating inorganic residue on thermal breakdown and optionally a bare earth wire. A screening layer is formed by a laminate comprising a centre layer of mineral fibre cloth having one face formed by a layer of metal foil and the the other by a layer of organic material infusible below 200°C, preferably regenerated cellulose or cured isophalate polyester film. An extruded sheath of flame-retardant polymeric material contacts, but does not adhere to, the infusible film layer of the laminate. This separation of the screening layer from the sheath ensures that it can be cut back for termination with negligible risk of damage to the conductor insulation and minimal risk of damage to the essential metal layer of the screening laminate. After it has been so cut back, the projecting end of the laminate may be turned back over the cut end of the sheath to expose a metal layer that is sufficiently supported to make an effective screen connection by mechanical means.

A heat-detector cable comprises first and second digital heat-detector elements assembled in close proximity, each comprising a pair of conductors biassed towards each other but normally prevented from contacting by a coating of a fusible insulating material on at least one of them, the response characteristics of the said first and second elements on exposure to hazardous temperatures differing such that the first said element responds sooner than the second. Preferably the fusible materials have substantially different softening temperatures, that in the first element having the lower softening temperature. Fire or overtemperature conditions can be distinguished from faults by the difference in response times.

A device is disclosed for use in constructing an optical fibre termination enclosure. The device is in the form of a cover which has means for attaching it to the opening of a box. The cover has means for receiving at least one optical fibre connector to provide an optical connection on the front face of the box, and means on the rear face of the cover for storing excess fibre.
