A component supply tape (2) is stepped to present each pocket (10) at a component pick-up area, and a top cover of the tape (2) is peeled back so that each pocket (10) is opened in turn. A shutter (66) is positioned over the pick-up area prior to tape movement so that the pocket (10) is covered by the shutter (66) as the top cover (6) is peeled from the substrate. After each indexing step, the shutter (66) is actuated to uncover the opened pocket (10) which is situated at the pick-up area for retrieval by the vacuum nozzle (30) of a pick-and-place head. By the improved method and apparatus of the instant invention, the pick-and-place head is provided with a finger for opening the shutter (66) of the feeder while the vacuum nozzle (30) is advanced along a normal to the pick-up surface of the component (20), so as to minimize the period of time that the component (20) is uncovered.

An object of this invention is to provide a method and apparatus for preventing loss of components from opened pockets prior to their removal. The purpose of the invention is of straightening the leads of the components sufficiently for insertion into corresponding holes of a circuit board, as well as for testing the electrical functioning or physical integrity of the electrical component. This invention concerns a method and an apparatus for mounting components on circuit boards by means of tool sections movable toward and away from opposite sides of a mid-plane, said components comprising a body and leads extending in opposite directions, said circuit boards having holes with different center-to-center spacings for mounting of different components, and said tooling sections comprising lead formers and means for driving a formed lead into a corresponding hold. According to the invention, each of said driving means are spaced by spacing means from an adjacent outside former (149) and inwardly toward said mid-plane when mounting components via holes having spacings greater than the smallest hole spacing, so as to avoid a lead misinsertion by forcing a formed lead from driving engagement with a blade (145) of said driving means during an operation of clinching inserted leads to an underside of said circuit board.

A variable reluctance linear motor has a stator and an armature mounted so as to be movable along the length of the stator. Armature bearings are mounted to the armature via mechanical vibration dampers and contact the stator so that vibrations in the stator are transmitted to the bearings and dissipated in said vibration dampers. A sensor is mounted to the armature for obtaining position data for the armature with respect to the stator. A controller then calculates the phase currents for the motor phases based on the position data and a desired force value. The phase currents are calculated to maintain a minimum normal force between the armature and said stator, thereby further reducing vibrations. A conditional filter is applied when armature is within a predetermined distance from a desired location. The conditional filter, after a time delay, clamps the velocity feedback to a predetermined range and simultaneously reduces the velocity loop gain.

With a view to minimize the peeling tension, relief the tension on the cover material during feeding of the supply tape and avoiding the breakage of the cover tape, according to the invention, said guide surface is retracted in said reverse direction during said pelling thanks to retracting means (8, 74, 75), and contact is maintained between said tape cover (8) and said guide surface (68) during said retracting thanks to maintaining means (96).
