A system and method of modelling interaction between a plurality of agents and an environment, comprising providing agents with simple characteristics and storing those characteristis, storing detailed information on the complete environment and allowing the agents to access environment information from the stored detailed information on a location by location basis and use the information to progress through the environment, such that a processor can monitor these movements to determine suitability of the environment by providing an underlying environment map which is highly detailed and which is accessible by the simple agents. A more efficient and user friendly system and method for evaluating environment layouts is provided.

The method comprises launching optical radiation into the core of the multimode fibre away from the centre of the core so as to strongly excite a subset of the available modes of the multimode fibre. The subset of modes excited are within a small number of mode groups and thus have similar propagation constants leading to a reduction in modal dispersion and modal interference and smoothing of the frequency response passband region beyond the fibres specified 3dB base band bandwidth assisting RF transmission and recovery from this region.

A method of forming an interferometer film for an interferometer sensor comprises forming a parylene polymer layer (8) of substantially uniform thickness directly on an interferometer substrate (4;45), the layer forming the interferometer film. Since the interferometer film (8) is formed directly onto the surface of the interferometer substrate, there is improved conformity between the two surfaces at the interface between the polymer layer and the substrate and improved uniformity in the thickness of the film.
