In a method and apparatus for duplicating an original key, the keyway and keycode of the original key are measured and duplicated in a preform. The preform used in the duplication process need not include any keyway or keycode prior to the duplication process and, therefore, a single type of preform may be used in generating duplicates of many different types of keys. The apparatus may be automated to take the measurements of the original key and to cut the duplicate key, thus reducing the possibility of producing a nonfunctional duplicate.

A working of two streaks of cord grooves in a key plate is inefficient, and there is a problem that is is difficult to secure the desired precision of the cord grooves. The present invention provides the key plate and the method for manufacturing thereof for solving such problems. That is, the rear end portion of one cord groove 11 in a key plate K 1 is connected to the rear end portion of the other cord groove 12 through a connecting groove 13, whereby the milling cutter C worked the cord groove 11, works connecting groove 13 continuously, and further works cord groove 12 continuously. Therefore, without returning the milling cutter C back to the original position thereof, the cord groove 11, connecting groove 13 and cord groove 12 can be worked at a time, thereby being able to reduce the time necessary to work the cord grooves. The thus worked connecting groove 13 can be used as a groove which permits the movement of a dog plate 23 of a cylinder lock L in the merging direction thereof.

A key cutting machine (10) includes a cutter wheel (40), a key follower (54,128) and a key positioning fixture for retaining a master key (124) and a key blank (122) in defined positions. Longitudinal and lateral displacement elements displace the cutter (40) wheel and the key blank (22) relative to each other. First and second electronic position sensors generate cutter wheel longitudinal and lateral position signals which electrically define the position of the cutter wheel relative to the key blank blade. A mode control system selectively operates the key cutting machine in either an analog mode where the bit notch pattern of a master key is mechanically traced and duplicated in the key blade blank or in a digital mode in which an electronically defined bit notch pattern is electrically duplicated in the key blank blade without reference to or tracing the master key bit notch pattern.

An operating system exerts an effect on the turret (1) and causes, first of all the rotation just of the support element (20) from the infeed station (25) to the operating station (26), with the carriage (13) in a position of maximum retraction and, subsequently, the maximum advancement of the carriage (13) up to the working position, and once this has been done, the operating system causes the carriage (13) to retract again and this discharges the machined key (5). To conclude, the operating system causes the support element (20) to rotate in the opposite direction up to the infeed station (25), thereby giving rise to a fresh cycle.
