A flexible, aminoplast-curable film-forming composition and a process for preparing multi-layered coated articles coated with a pigmented or colored base coat and a transparent or clear topcoat are disclosed. A pigmented or colored base coat is first applied to a substrate followed by the application of a transparent topcoat to the base coat. The transparent topcoat composition is a flexible, curable film-forming composition comprising (1) a polyether polymer containing a plurality of terminal or pendant carbamate groups of structure (I); and (2) an aminoplast cross-linking agent. The topcoat composition provides a flexible composite coating with improved acid etch resistance, making the composite coating particuarly useful as a topcoat for plastic automotive parts.

A thermosetting powder coating composition comprising: (A) a vinylic copolymer having a number-average molecular weight of 1,500 to 6,000, a molecular weight distribution (weight-average molecular weight/number-average molecular weight) of 1.0 to 1.5 and a glass transition temperature of 40 to 100 °C and having at least one type of functional group selected from among epoxy, carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, and (B) a curing agent. It has an excellent blocking resistance and can give a coated article having an excellent appearance.

A color-plus-clear coating system is disclosed. A pigmented or colored basecoat is first applied to a substrate followed by the application of a transparent topcoat to the basecoat. The transparent topcoat composition is a crosslinkable composition comprising (1) a material containing a plurality of carbamate and/or urea functional groups and (2) an aminoplast crosslinking agent. The topcoat composition provides a composite coating with improved acid etch resistance, making the composite coating particularly useful as an automotive topcoat.

A crosslinkable liquid carrier-based coating composition formulated from components comprising an organic polymer(s) having acetoacetyl group functionality, a polyamine compound(s) having at least two acetoacetyl-reactive amino groups per molecule, and a non-polymeric monoacetoacetyl compound(s) which can evaporate on coating formulation selected from at least one of alkyl acetoacetate, alkyl acetoacetamide and 1-alkyl-1,3-butanedione where said alkyl groups in said compounds have from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, and wherein the ratio of the number of acetoacetyl groups from said monoacetoacetyl compound(s) to the number of polymer-bound acetoacetyl groups from said organic polymer(s) having acetoacetyl group functionality is within the range of from 0.8/1 to 1.5/1. The invention concerns aqueous dispersions of cross-linked polymer particles, produced in an aqueous medium from component (A), a polymer which has at least two hydroxyl groups and a sufficient number of ionic groups to form a stable aqueous dispersion, and which may, optionally, be dissolved in an organic solvent, and a further component (B), at elevated temperature, characterized in that component (A) is a polyester polyol, polyurethane or polyacrylate with an acid number of from 5 to 168 and component (B) is an amino resin which consists of molecules containing at least two reactive groups consisting of hydroxyl and/or amino and/or ether groups, and, further characterized in that the ratio by weight of component (A) to component (B) is between 30:70 and 95:5 and the dispersion is stable in, and can be used in, water and/or an organic solvent or mixtures thereof. The invention also concerns a method of producing these dispersions, their use and coating compositions containing them.
