    摘要: The invention relates to a gas discharge tube (30) of a type that may be used for example in gas turbine engine (10) ignition systems. The gas discharge tube (30) has an envelope (42) containing a gas therein and the envelope has a pair of spaced electrodes (38, 40) for application of an electric potential difference across the gas. An electromagnetic radiation source (44), such as a deep UV light source, is arranged to emit photons (50) into the envelope (42) so as to initiate ionisation of the gas, thereby reducing the potential difference required to cause electrical conductance between the electrodes. The electromagnetic radiation source, which may comprise light emitting diodes, may be selectively controlled.

    摘要: A partitioned exciter system for use with an igniter in an aircraft engine. The exciter has low-energy charging circuit and a high-energy discharge circuit that are remotely located from each other and that are connected by a low-energy coaxial cable. The charging circuit can be located within the aircraft fuselage and the discharge circuit mounted at the engine. The discharge circuit contains passive components that do not need special environmental protection, and the remotely located charging circuit can utilize existing electrical circuitry protection measures already in place in the fuselage to protect against lightning and other potentially-damaging environmental factors. Also disclosed is a housing arrangement for the discharge circuit that allows it to be directly attached to the igniter.

    摘要: The invention relates to a system for igniting a fuel-air mixture in a combustion chamber with a corona discharge. The system comprises an electrode inside of the combustion chamber, an electric circuit which provides radio frequency electric power to the electrode, and a ground formed by the combustion chamber walls. A radio frequency voltage differential formed between the electrode and the ground produces a radio frequency electric field therebetween which causes a fuel-air mixture to ionize resulting in combustion of the fuel-air mixture. The system can be utilized in engines such as internal combustion engines or gas turbine engines, for example.

    摘要: A system is provided for detecting a spark in an igniter for a gas turbine engine. An igniter generates a plasma, or spark, somewhat similar to an automotive spark plug. In the invention, an inductive pick-up is positioned adjacent the igniter, to detect current pulses in the igniter, to thereby infer the presence of spark. The signal produced is small, and requires amplification. However, the environment is hot, often exceeding 400 degrees F. The invention utilizes an amplifier composed of passive components, in the form of an RLC circuit.
