A process for preparing an element comprising a support in the form of a sheet or web having on one major surface thereof an array of walls capable of defining microareas on said support, which comprises introducing a first composition into a first set of microareas on said support, and introducing a second composition into a second interlaid set of microareas on said support, characterized in that radiation is directed toward said support at an acute angle with respect to the plane of said support, said walls interrupting a portion of the radiation to create a shadowed set of microareas while permitting exposure of an unshadowed, interlaid set of microareas, and selectively introducing said first composition into one set of microareas as a function of shadowing. Preferably the walls define microcells and the microcells of at least one of said sets are differentiated from the rest by at least one of depth, size, shape and orientation such that they are capable of being exposed to the radiation while the remaining set(s) are shadowed by the lateral walls.

A process for the production of a liquid crystal display device having a color filter comprises assembling comprising, in order, afirst support member, a plurality of first electrodes secured to the first support member, a liquid crystal layer, at least one second electrode and a second, substantially transparent support member. An imageable layer which, upon exposure to actinic radiation, can form three different colors, is disposed between the first and second support members, and the assembly is exposed to actinic radiation so as to produce in the imageable layer a plurality of filter elements of first, second and third colors, these filter elements being aligned with the first electrodes, thereby forming the color filter in situ between the first and second support members.

A colour filter assemblage is disclosed comprising a colour filter array, preferably prepared by photographic means, and an improved passivation layer serving as protective barrier top layer. The passivation layer consists of a organic-anorganic composite material (ORMOCER). In a preferred embodiment the composite material consists of a polymer containing a monomer functionalized with an alkoxy silane group which is further crosslinked by controlled hydrolysis and condensation with at least one metal alkoxide, most preferably an tetraalkoxysilane such as tetraethoxysilane. The colour filter assemblage is suitable for incorporation in a liquid crystal device.

This invention provides improved methods and compositions for achieving material coloration using particle scattering. These coloration effects can be designed to be either highly stable or dependent upon the switching effects of either temperature, integrated thermal exposure, moisture absorption, or exposure to actinic radiation. Articles employing materials with these coloration effects are described. Compositions comprise a solid, light-transmitting matrix component having a non-liquid particle scattering colorant dispersed. Articles are produced wherein another solid second matrix component has an electronic transition colorant dispersed therein and the first and second compositions are disposed on one another and optionally interpenetrate each other. Colored articles are produced in the form of fibers, films and molded articles.
