Then, when a reproduction request is made for a reproduction zone including such non-recorded zone, it is subsequently determined at the predetermined timing that the non-recorded zone is present in the reproduction zone, and an error process starts.

To provide a simple configuration capable of recording data on an optical disc reliably at high speed even if recording errors occur. Data that is normally recorded on the optical disc is erased from a storing means, and when a recording error has occurred, a predetermined range subsequent to the address at which the recording error has occurred is selected as a skip area, and this skip area is skipped to record the data stored in the storing means from a recording resume address of the optical disc. This makes it possible to avoid repetition of recording errors in the vicinity of the error-occurring location where the possibility of repeating errors is high. Data retransmission at the time of resuming recording can also be omitted to eliminate the time loss for retransmitting the data, and to reduce the storage space of the host unit necessary for storing the data to be retransmitted.

The priority video data includes video data which includes a greater number of portions of video data than that of data displayed in a display unit, which includes a smaller number of portions of video data than a maximum number that can be held in the cache memory, and which has a high possibility of being output from the cache memory to the display unit. Also, the cache control unit preferentially reads the priority video data from a recording medium and stores it in the cache memory.

The control means (101) further carries out such a control in a reproducing mode that the digital data is read from the storage means (160) into the buffer memory (150) at a reading speed which is higher than a speed at which the digital data is outputted from the buffer memory (150) to the outside to thereby allow the plurality of files of digital data stored in the storage means (160) to be outputted to the outside as digital data in a continuous format. With this arrangement, it becomes possible to achieve compatibility among different types of apparatuses, to provide arbitrary search positions while a continuous recording is being made and to reproduce a plurality of files of digital data in a continuous manner.

Data recording/reproduction is carried out in a disc format such that error correction codes interleaved with respect to the direction of data on a disc are collectively blocked into an error correction unit and that the input/output order of user data in an ECC block as an error correction unit is made coincident with the direction of processing of the error correction codes. Thus, coding can be started at the time when necessary data for generating one code is transmitted, without waiting for transmission of data for one ECC block. Also, transmission of user data can be started at the time when correction of one code is completed, without waiting for completion of correction operation for one ECC block. Also, since the direction of correction codes is the same as the direction of user data, no memory for rearrangement of data is required and the hardware structure can be minimized. Moreover, since less data transmission/reception takes place between the buffer memory and the external device, bus arbitration can be easily carried out.
