摘要: The device for controlling the queen bees' egg-laying process (7) will detect the queen bee previously marked by light reactive pigments by a sensor (1) corresponding to the marking method and connected to a control unit, which, upon detection, will operate moving gates (3) connected to the device (7) by starting an engine. The device (7) with its side walls can directly be fitted to the comb (17) and the detection zone (2) of the sensor (1) will fall within the seam (16) flanked by the walls. The marked queen bee will get to the device (7) unchecked and when detected, the moving gates (3) will close and prevent the queen bee from getting out of the gates (3). Since after the gates (3) close, the space available for the queen bee is limited, the queen bee will shortly be forced to leave the device (7) in the predetermined direction of guiding (11) through the opening (8). The device also includes a (7) fence (12) and a dividing wall (10) that partly or fully include a queen excluder and keep the queen bee confined for the required period while the fence (12) and the dividing wall (10) will not prevent workers from passing through.

摘要: An animal model for cardiovascular disease comprising one or more vascular plaque lesions formed at selected sites within a vascular segment of a nonhuman mammal. The vascular plaque lesion is formed by administering a hypercholesterolemic diet to the nonhuman mammal, inflicting an injury to the vascular wall at the selected site after a predetermined exposure to the hypercholesterolemic diet, and applying a hydrogel to the injured vascular wall. Another aspect of the invention provides a method for evaluating a test compound for an effect on atherosclerotic lesion formation comprising administering to a nonhuman mammal a hypercholesterolemic diet, and, after a defined period of time, isolating a segment of a blood vessel using a balloon catheter, inflicting an injury to the vascular wall within the isolated segment, and applying a hydrogel within the vascular segment. The method further comprises forming a vascular plaque lesion on the vascular wall at the site of the injury, delivering the test compound to the nonhuman mammal, and monitoring atherosclerotic lesion size and composition at the injured site after a defined period of exposure to the test compound.

摘要: A bee nest (22) for use in an apparatus (20) for providing solitary bees for pollination comprises a portable on-site incubator (24). The bee nest can comprise a plurality of corrugated sheets (40), each sheet comprising a plurality of flutes. When the sheets are stacked together, the flutes form cavities (44) arranged in a tessellating pattern. The portable incubator (24) can comprise a chamber (26) for holding dormant adult bees, an opening providing access to the chamber, a passage (30) for exiting of bees from the chamber, means (32) for heating the chamber, means (34) for controlling chamber temperature, and a power supply. Dormant adult bees placed in the incubator are stimulated into activity and leave the incubator. Female bees that leave later lay eggs in the bee nest.

摘要: Confining structure (5) to confine the queen bee of a colony of bees within a beehive comprising a confining body (16), a reception chamber provided in said containing body to receive said queen bee, at least one introduction opening (16) provided on said containing body and communicating with said chamber for introducing said queen bee in said chamber, occluding means capable of being coupled/uncoupled to/from said containing body to occlude said opening, and a plurality of feeding slots (25) provided on said containing body and communicating with said chamber so as to allow said queen bee to be fed on the part of said colony of bees, and suspending means (26) associated with said containing body to suspend said containing body within said beehive nest, so as to maintain the proximity of said queen bee to said colony of bees during the confining period of said queen bee. The structure solves the drawbacks and problems found in the prior art, as it allows providing an ideal arrangement of the queen bee with respect to its colony of bees over a sufficiently prolonged period of confinement.
