A method is described for the building up of a special electronic roadmap for a vehicle, for the indication of the position of the vehicle on a road in a geographic area comprising a computer connected to a display and an internal memory connected to the computer, and which is based on an electronic roadmap provided and established with the help of data from a satellite navigation system, characterised in that a) the vehicle is fitted with sensors for the measurement of parameters such as movement and orientation of the vehicle, said parameters are registered and stored in true time and comprise: - its compass direction - Kr, (40) - its angle of incline - Sv, (41) - its angle of tilt - Kv, (42) - its height above sea level - ( hoh ), (43) and also - a radar picture of the road surface and the surrounding terrain and which change as the vehicle move forwards, (44) b) the vehicle is driven along a given route and said signals from the sensors in the electronic roadmap base are measured, registered and stored, said parameters are stored and added to the corresponding position coordinates for said route in the electronic roadmap, and c) with the measurements the exact position coordinates in the electronic roadmap are established for the vehicle with the help of data from a satellite navigation system, such as GPS registering, which are registered in, an in itself, known way. A method and a system are also described for establishing the position of a vehicle along a road without having to use data from satellite navigation.

In a navigation device in accordance with the invention, user profiles may be stored and used to navigate a user who may be driving in a vehicle, on foot, or in other mode of transportation. Each user profile corresponds to one of the user's personae. For example, the user business profile corresponding to the user's business persona may be different from the user personal profile corresponding to the user's personal persona. For instance, the user business profile may include fine-dining type restaurants for business meetings while the user personal profile may instead include fast-food type restaurants for personal dining. The inventive navigation device provides the user with a navigated route, together with information concerning the favorite facilities and events surrounding the navigated route, which satisfy the preferences in a selected user profile. In accordance with an aspect of the invention, blockages may also be established using the device to avoid selected areas, e.g., high crime areas, in the navigated route, or to block transmission of selected information concerning, e.g., uninteresting facilities and events, to the inventive navigation device.

A system for converting a voice input requested location to a destination location useable by a navigation device in a vehicle. The system includes a mobile communicator (101), preferably a mobile phone, in communication with a base station and a voice portal server (104). The voice portal server (104) identifies through a voice recognition algorithm a destination location corresponding to a requested location verbally input by the vehicle occupant. The voice portal server may access the internet for additional information. The voice portal server may prompt the occupant to respond to interrogatories to narrow the possible matches for the requested location to one destination location. The destination location is transmitted from the voice portal server via the base station and via the mobile communicator to a decoder (102) in an encoded format, preferably in DTMF (Dual Tone Multi-Frequency) format. The decoder decoding the destination location and transmitting the destination location to a navigation device. The navigation device plotting a selected route from the current location to the destination location. A method of using the system is provided. An in-vehicle apparatus using the system is also provided.
