Process and apparatus for desulfurizing the gaseous product of the vacuum distillation of the heavy fraction of crude oil. The initial gaseous mixture (8) to be desulfurized is an incondensible gas that contains hydrogen sulfide. A gas-liquid contact column (2) contains first and second sections (3, 4) that contain beds of packing material, which may be structured or random packing. The beds are supported below irrigation devices (18) that promote the wetting of the beds but cause minimal pressure loss in the gases passing through the column. The initial gaseous mixture is dried and introduced (14) into the first section (3) of the column. Also introduced into the first section of the column is a fresh ammonia solution (9) containing the stoichiometric quantity for reacting with the amount of hydrogen sulfide present in the initial gaseous mixture. Finally, the first section of the column receives a second ammonia solution that is passed from the second section of the column into the first section.

A process for upgrading an oil feedstock (102) includes reacting the oil feedstock (102) with a quantity of an alkali metal (106), wherein the reaction produces solid materials and liquid materials. The solid materials are separated from the liquid materials. The solid materials may be washed and heat treated (109) by heating the materials to a temperature above 400 C. The heat treating (109) occurs in an atmosphere that has low oxygen and water content. Once heat treated (109), the solid materials are added to a solution comprising a polar solvent, where sulfide, hydrogen sulfide or polysulfide anions dissolve. The solution comprising polar solvent is then added to an electrolytic cell (120), which during operation, produces alkali metal (106) and sulfur (128).

The present invention relates to a method of treating a hydrocarbon comprising the steps of: a) providing an aqueous solution comprising tetra-sulfo iron-phthalocyanine and a stabilizing amount of a complexing agent; b) combining the aqueous solution at least with an amount of a treatment amine to form a hydrocarbon treatment composition; and c) contacting a hydrocarbon with the hydrocarbon treatment composition. A method for manufacturing a hydrocarbon oil, comprising: a first step wherein a feedstock oil containing an oxygen-containing organic compound and a water-insoluble chlorine-containing compound is brought into contact with a hydrogenation catalyst comprising a support containing a porous inorganic oxide and one or more metals selected from Group VIA and Group VIII of the periodic table supported on the support in the presence of hydrogen to generate a hydrocarbon oil and water in a vapor state by the hydrodeoxygenation of an oxygen-containing organic compound and convert the water-insoluble chlorine-containing compound into a water-soluble chlorine-containing compound; a second step wherein the water in the reaction product of the first step is maintained in a vapor state and the reaction product of the first step is brought into contact with a nitrogen-containing Brønsted base compound which has a boiling point at normal pressure of 100°C or less and is water-soluble to obtain a product to be treated; and a third step wherein the product to be treated is cooled to a temperature not higher than the temperature at which water in a vapor state is liquefied to form an aqueous phase containing a water-soluble chlorine-containing compound and a nitrogen-containing Bronsted base compound and then separate the aqueous phase from an oil to be treated to obtain a product oil containing a hydrocarbon oil.

The mercaptan sulfur in the first product is then converted or removed to obtain a second product having a decreased amount of mercaptan sulfur.
