Methods of inhibiting corrosion in a benzene distillation or dryer unit are provided wherein alkenyl succinic acids or anhydrides (ASA) are brought into contact with metal surfaces thereby protecting the metal from an acidic corrosive medium flowing through the overhead. The benzene distillation column or drying tower may be utilized to purify benzene for subsequent feed of the purified benzene to an alkylation process such as in the alkylation of benzene by ethene to form ethylbenzene utilizing a zeolite alkylation catalyst.

The present invention relates to the use of a product obtainable by the reaction of a fatty acid, or mixture of acids, having the formula R1COOH (I); and a dicarboxylic acid or a derivative thereof having the formula (IIa) or (IIb) with an alkoxylated fatty amine having the formula (III) or a partial or wholly quaternized derivative thereof; optionally said reaction between the fatty acid, the dicarboxylic acid and the alkoxylated fatty amine is being followed by a further reaction step wherein part or all of the nitrogen atoms are quaternized by reaction with an alkylating agent R5X; as a corrosion inhibitor for metal surfaces. The present invention also relates to such products and to methods for their production.

[Task] To provide a crude treatment system capable of treating crude containing a comparatively large content of a corrosive material. [Means for Resolution] A primary distillation tower 11 fractionates first crude into a target fraction. A secondary distillation tower 21 which fractionates second crude having a corrosive material content greater than that of the first crude into a light fraction of which the content of the corrosive material is an amount not causing corrosion in the primary distillation tower 11 and a heavy fraction as the remainder thereof. Also, a light fraction supply line supplies the light fraction from the secondary distillation tower 21 to the primary distillation tower 11 so as to treat the light fraction in the primary distillation tower 11. Here, the secondary distillation tower 21 and the supply line for supplying second crude to the secondary distillation tower 21 are made from a material having corrosion resistance with respect to the corrosive material under circumstances in which the secondary distillation tower 21 and the supply line contact with the second crude and the heavy fraction.

Suitable amine scavengers include, but are not necessarily limited to, carboxylic anhydrides and copolymers of carboxylic anhydrides, aromatic anhydrides, isocyanates, polyisocyanates, and epoxides. The non-corrosive reaction products of the amines and/or ammonia with these scavengers are preferably oil-soluble, non-basic and thermally stable. The amine scavengers bind up and react with the amines and/or ammonia to keep them from reacting with materials such as acids (e.g. HCl) to form corrosive amine salts.

The corrosion of metals in contact with an aqueous alkanolamine solution in an acid gas removal unit is inhibited by adding a corrosion inhibiting amount of an alkanemonothiol or alkanedithiol compound to the aqueous alkanolamine solution. The alkanemonothiol and alkanedithiol compounds are useful for inhibiting the corrosion of metals in both the acid gas rich and lean portions of the acid gas removal unit.
