A dual-tracking phase-locked loop circuit is provided for moving with minimum disruption from conventional PLL operation to processor-controlled tracking of another closely related clock. In addition to conventional PLL components the circuit comprises a processor-controlled up/down counter which may operate alternatively as a link in the loop or as providing the base-line frequency determining value at the time of transition from PLL to processor-controlled tracking operation, thereby ensuring none disruptive transition.

A protection arrangement for a two-wire line, such as a telephone sunscriber line, includes a transformer having two primary windings and a secondary winding. The primary windings are connected in series with the wires of the line with phases such that common mode (longitudinal) currents on the line induce a current in the secondary winding, whereas loop currents do not. The induced current in the secondary winding is amplified and used to trigger a protection device, such as a triac or SCR and diode bridge arrangement, to short circuit the line for the duration of any excessive current thereon.

A security device for use with a telephone handset having a microphone transducer (12) and an ear transducer (11) is disclosed. It is adapted to prevent eavesdropping while the handset is in an on-hook position. The security device is comprised of switching means (PSS₁-PSS₁₂) disposed in the handset adapted to disable the transducers. The switching means is switched to a first state when the handset is placed within a first predetermined orientation corresponding to a secure mode and is switched to a second state when the handset is placed within a second predetermined orientation corresponding to an operative mode.

In the manufacture of terminals, a stripe of precious metal is inlayed into a strip of metal from which terminals are formed. The precious metal is only required at the localities at which dimpled contact areas are to be formed. The invention provides for the removal of the inlay (12) at spaced apart localities (13). A tool (26, 30) is moved laterally across the metal strip (10), the tool having one or more cutting edges (72, 73). The cutting edges (72, 73) are inserted into the strip (10) on one side of the inlay stripe (12), traverses across, cutting the stripe (12), and then exits from the strip (10) on the other side of the stripe (12). The tool (27, 30) returns to its original position.

A data transmission equipment, known as a primary digital multiplex (PDMX) consists of a bus structure formed by parallel lines on a printed circuit board, with the circuit units (1,2,3,4,5) on printed circuit cards set at right angles to the bus structure. The circuit units include a control unit (1,2) also called a core facilities unit, which acts as an interface to one or more 2Mb/sec. trunks, and so-called tributary units (3,4,5) which give access to subscriber and other outlets. Various networks using one or more such PDMX equipment are described. The signalling and control arrangements for the equipment use a signalling processing unit (2) and a tone processor (6). The signalling processing unit monitors the bus for signals and line conditions and issues signals appropriately. The tone processor functions in a generally similar manner.

A tubular porous silica preform 12 is made by depositing particulate silica on a mandrel 10 from which the preform is subsequently removed. A second solid cylindrical porous silica preform 28 is made by depositing particulate silica on an end surface of a support body. The porous preforms 12, 28 are then dried and the tubular preform 12 is heated in a fluorine containing atmosphere to introduce a fluorine dopant into the silica. The rod preform 28 is then placed inside the tubular preform 12 and the two preforms are further dried in a chlorine atmosphere to remove residual moisture. The dual preforms are then heated in a zone sintering furnace to consolidate and collapse the porous material of the rod and tubular preforms into a transparent fused silica rod. The composite preform obtained is heated and dielectric optical waveguide drawn from it, the waveguide having a pure silica or doped silica core derived from the rod preform 28 and a fluorine doped silica cladding derived from the tubular preform 12.
