An apparatus is disclosed for adjusting the packer assembly (36) of an agricultural baler. An important feature of the disclosed apparatus is that the adjusting device (112) remains stationary relative to the bale case (10) of the baler during movement of the packer forks (38). An agricultural baling machine controls the compacting of crop material by monitoring the stress experienced by a reciprocably driven plunger assembly (22) employed to apply a compactive force to crop material introduced into a bale case (20). Signals produced by stress sensor (124, 126, 128, 130) mounted relative to the plunger assembly (22) are analysed by a programmed signal processor (200) which accordingly generates a control signal for controlling a servo valve (61). The analysis performed by the signal processor (200) results in the generation of a pulse width modulated control signal that enables the servo valve (61) to adjust the degree of resistance to crop movement in the bale case (20) so that the stress experienced by the plunger assembly (22) is maintained near a predetermined level in accordance with desired bale density. The signal processor (200) also monitors the quantity of crop material ingestation and precludes the increasing of tension application to the bale case rails (54, 56) unless a predetermined minimum level of crop ingestation is being achieved.

A round baler (8) having a single bale forming chamber is provided with an electronic control circuit (10) which makes its operation automatic except for the operator-controlled functions of starting and stopping forward motion of the baler (8). Under the circuit control the baler (8) forms a bale (R), wraps it with twine, cuts the twine, raises the tailgate (6), ejects the wrapped bale (R) and closes the tailgate (6). The control circuit (10) energizes a first indicator (G) when the tailgate (6) closes to signal the operator to begin forward motion of the baler (8). When a point is reached in the baling cycle at which the wrapping of the bale (R) is to commence, the circuit (10) energizes a second indicator (R) to signal the operator to stop forward motion of the baler (8). The circuit (10) also detects certain malfunctions and energizes a third indicator (Y, 20) to signal the operator that a malfunction has occurred.
